Going for a new computer - please, some help will be cool

Hmm,

I'm pretty sure all the wav stuff works fine on my system. Stuff like iTunes, VLC, Popcorn Time, Windows Media Player. Never had an issue with the WAV driver...

Well, everything seems to be relatively stable so far, except the stutters heard in Foobar, I did not find the reason. But Windows Media Player works very well indeed.

Well, as everything goes on and technology and hardware changes, some other things dies or stays out of the way by force and against your will. Wavelab 6 and Cubase 5 do not longer correctly work with Win 7 64 bits and beyond. They do work but by themselves, using 32 bits plugins, but if you go 64 bits OS, and your plugin compatibility is 64 bits, is a serious issue that cannot be solved. Then it is a waste to have such a computer and not to be able to use the four cores you have paid for, as these programs are very limited in this regard. I have read and done many possible fix things but they do not work. In the other hand, I cannot not go the Steinberg way anymore, the upgrades and the options they offer are out of my reach, particularly now after having built such an expensive computer. It sounds totally crazy to me, but I will change my DAW! Me, the Cubase number one advocate! Wow! This is something I would have never ever done if a gun would not be in my head menacing me to push the trigger… That is to say: money, responsibilities, work and... the one who never forgives you... time.

Well, now that I said it, I will just pass with all worries immediately to the other side of the river, I will not stay complaining or anything like that, no time for such a silly way of life. I will get happy instate for getting into something new, and will find my new DAW. A single, full solution will be, something to do everything in all areas, sequencing – audio editing – audio cleansing – mastering – manicure – well…, I can pass on the last one, but the rest must be covered, period. There are so many DAWs out there, much cheaper than Cubase and much cheaper than Wavelab, there are even free DAWs that are really good, and will probably allow me to do all I need to do

I've tried them all back in the day. Stayed with Cakewalk for some reason, but it may not be for you. I am pretty sure Ronnie uses Cakewalk too.

True, Cakewalk is not for me...

I had the chance to get to know one of their developers in Glasgow, not even him could convince me... so no, it is not for me in general terms.

I am prone to go the traditional way, something like Reason or some other similar DAW will not get with me. I have friends with different DAWs in their studios, so I will ask them what their experience is, I don’t want to just read reviews, I want to see any given DAW on the go and ask questions about it on the fly, so I am confident I will be able to choose a new one soon.

StudioOne 3, Samplitude, Cockos Reaper and Pro Tools 11, are the contenders, as long as they have full support for 64 bits, multicore capability and their licence can be transfered.

Why do you chose Cockos Reaper from these sequencers?

Reaper has all the stuff that you absolutely need and it works as it should. it's cheap.

i prefer the Cubase feature-set and the editing style.

if you mix in Scope as i do, the sequencer really isn't so important. what's most important is just how the tools are laid out. that's a matter of personal preference....

I've been using Sonar since forever and it's had it's ups and downs. At one point I switched to Cubase and I found it very similar and more solid than Sonar at the time. But then Cubase started to act up and I switched back to Sonar around Version 4 or 5 and have stayed with it. I think I've learned that no DAW is bullet-proof and if you do some serious taxing of the DAW with effects and samplers/synths you will run into issues along the line. Sometimes there are workarounds (stop some background process that snuck up on you, play with buffers, purge samples or just brute force metal by adding RAM or CPU); sometimes the DAW needs a bug fix) but for a couple of years now I have found no real show stoppers. Granted my love affairs with native effects are relatively short lived and I almost always go back to Scope for compressors, reverb, delays, eq and channel strip functions, inserts, etc., and therefore I essentially mix all the DAW tracks in Scope mixers so the DAW load is pretty light. I think it sounds better that way too. I use Scope to route all my MIDI and Audio so I basically use Sonar as an automated VST host and MIDI/Audio Hard Disk recorder. I'm used to it so it works for me. I probably could go to Cubase again but don't see any real advantage to the way I work. The feature set and workflow is pretty much alike. There's a lot to be said for Reaper because you could use it the same way I basically use Sonar - with no to low bloat. Again, and probably like most of us here, Scope does most of my heavy lifting and I'm pretty sure I would have more issues if I wasn't using Scope, no matter which DAW I chose. I feel like with Scope under the hood I have more spare horsepower and headroom and well, more confidence in the DAW.

Definitely, no DAW is perfect, this is a thoughtful start for the search, not to be silly disappointed. I see you do exactly what Gary does in the way you work. My work is, in regard with the sequencer, rather simple, I am not a machine lover in terms of accessories, I tend to compose and play almost everything in straight forward. I tried Cakewalk very long time ago, so to be fair perhaps I should give it another try, but the one I tried in those days I didn’t like. This was exactly in… the year 2000 yes.

Pretty sure Cakewalk has a free trial right now. Why not give it a shot? I found it the most straight forward at the time I didn't pay for my softwarez The built in FX are pretty much useless... Except for 2 or 3 of them.

I recomend you totally this little and free friend! It jups over all drivers and playes with your Scope through ASIO, so it is perfect. It is beautiful, simple, stable, everything, very light. If you have problems with Foobar, like I did, go this way, it is a perfect replacement and it plays everything in every bit depth, so great for a Scope musicians and composers.

I have three audio/video players. Do I need this?

It is better than many in my opinion. It is very light and none intrusive, so no harm in trying it out. I have installed many players lately trying to cover what Foobar did, and Winyl does it even better, and ASIO driver.
