line in can be high or low impedance. a passive pickup on an instrument is mic level and usually high impedance. line level is MUCH hotter than mic level. if you plug into a line level jack, you will need to add lots of gain, and that's probably bad. line inputs are not designed to add lots of gain...not cleanly, anyway.

Yeah, when I did that with my electric into a SoundCraft mixer, there was no high frequencies at all...

I used a 'free' practice amp as a DI box... yeah, those were the days.

well, it depends
I once measured the output of a passive Dimarzio 122p pickup
300 mV with moderate finger play, 800 mV with a pick and heavy rock style :o
these things can be hot...

btw: for tracking on the iPad I use an Audient ID22, which has an excellent Hi-Z input
but the example linked above used a preamp module from a vintage German broadcast console
(fed directly to the ID22's converters by it's hardware return path, cool feature)
it clearly outperforms the Audient's input stage, the tone is much more 'alive' and detailed, too

cheers, Tom

Yeah, that's almost line level... I don't remember the voltages off hand. It's been a while since I soldered. But when I did, I was able to take out a 144 pin chip off the board and put on a new one :o

Actually,

I think the output on my bass is pretty hot. Gain switch is set to off and the input gain knob is on 0. The bass volume is not even on full and it almost overloads the A16 U :o

  "mistaking him for someone important in the band?" That's an insult man...

The lesson we have to learn here, is that, if a girl asks you "Do you play bass?" you have to say "I'm a member of the band, period"... then wait for a couple of days to tell her what you actually play...

Hilarious....

Anyway, seriously now, she must be one of the most stupid girls ever been born in this earth...

From Alesis 12R Manual page 12 : "Electric Guitars and basses may be plugged directly into the [LINE IN] jacks, if you raise thr [TRIM] level. The Studio 12R has more than enough gain (up to 50 dB when the channel fader and trim are set to maximum) for guitars, although some pickups may sound better if they are plugged directly into a high-impedance preamp designed for guitar use. Plug the output of such pre-amps into any [LINE IN] jack."

Well, I never had a problem plugging any of my guitars either directly or via my Digitech ValveFX tube pre into the 12R Line Ins. As for the sound (of the bass plugged directly into the 12R line in) - here's an example on this track : https://soundcloud.com/hitfoundry/alive

Once a girl asked if I played bass on that track - now she's my wife

The bass on the track sound very good. Does it even go through an amp? It's sound dry. I had to listen on my laptop speaker, because my bluetooth speakers keep loosing connection every 2 weeks. I thought bluetooth was a 20 year old technology, and it still doesn't work right.

So how many hours of practice do I need to find an affordable wife that won't sell my Scope?

Mac/OS X has no issues. Right. That's why my soundbar works again after resetting my Mac, grrrrr!

No real amps here, just DI and amp sims ITB. In that song just dry I think. My wife paid for 2/3 of my XITE from her superannuation payout - the rest of which went to a new kitchen - also a good investment since she cooks Italian cuisine :)

Awe yeah, the bass is back from the shop. Looks almost like new, they cleaned the frets. Action is way lower than what it was and well, it has brand new strings. They said it's set to factory standard. I trust this shop, I always go there.
