first of all: the wooden substance sounds ok - nice punchy tone 8)
but probably needs adjustment - the distance between pole piece and string matters, it's very sensitive
you adjust the distance (by the pickup screws) to balance the volume of the strings
other settings:
if the neck ist too straight, you'll get fretbuzz - release the trussrod (the metal part) inside the neck a tiny bit
if it's bowed too much, playing is uncomfortable (needs too much finger pressure)
turn the other way, but release string tension before doing so
usually 'almost, but not completely straight' is best, unless you play with a lot of (physical) power...

can't identify the bridge on your bass, but usually there is something to adjust individual hight of each string
neck-bow and string height interact, get this right first, then adjust pickups for optimal sound
the splitcoil PU is frequently setup in a way that the inner strings are slightly closer to the pole pieces

reads more complicated than it actually is - a proper setup is the base of good sound

cheers, Tom

Thanks for the useful tips!

I will take up some close up pictures tomorrow so you can examine it.

I am not really sure how to adjust the strings. I don't see an adjustment screw for the truss rod anywhere. It's easy to find on a guitar hmm...

Try running the bass into scope, and through a Vinco and one of the S|C EQs (SL9000). The vinco is all you need, but you'll want the eq :)

Yeah, I think I have tried the Vinco before. I do like it. That's the compressor, isn't it?

Took it to my local shop just now. They're gonna put on new strings, adjust everything and clean it. Around 60USD. They said it's gonna play like new. And they have actually seen these around before :D The guy said that this one also has a jazz style pickup, so it allows for more tone variety.

You will be happy to have sent it to the shop..., if they have anough experience, you will see a great difference, particularly for your hands and for intonation.

Basses have a world of themselves, they really have a lot to offer, much more than most people think... untill they get to play them... :)

I plug my Yamaha bass into my Alesis 12R which I use to front end my XITE analog inputs. Then record clean with very little processing during mix other than compression and maybe a touch of chorus.

In general sounds better than software basses - except for the Jaco Fretless. Other virtual basses or samples I use rather than playing because I'm lazy

Are you supposed to plug in a high impedance instrument into a line in? When I did that a long time ago, my guitar sounded like junk...

not all basses are high impedance - the Yamaha may have an active tone-control/impedance converter on board
then it fits perfectly a line-in
