Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
Hi all,
Like many I don't switch off my PC and Mac but let the power saving routines manage them.
How bad would it be to not switch off an Xite1?
I want to minimise the length of time it takes to get a Studio session up and running ....
Ta!

Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
a computer using the XITE cannot and must not sleep.
shut the computer all the way down and disable the sleep function!
there is nothing to be gained from using the sleep function.

.......including hibernate?
Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
yep.
Scope cards and XITEs cannot hibernate. when the computer hibernates or sleeps, it cuts power to the slots, which makes the Scope hardware disappear from the motherboard's mind and therefore the operating system's world.
what do you save, but a very brief few minutes of boot time?
DAWs and "power saving" are non-sequitors....

Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
If you start your Xite before the pc and then the pc sleeps, when you wake it up, you can load Scope. But you can't turn your pc to sleep when Scope is running.
The question to know if it's bad for your xite, I believe it's not bader than to never switch it off. As there is no mecanical device in it, such as hard drive, it must not be very bad.

Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
yes, you should probably power down because the dsps use a lot of juice and make heat. other than that, you can turn it off or not. never turn it off with the computer running, however. always power down after the computer is powered down.

Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
The two enemies are heat, and large flows of electrons (ie-when turning on, which is when most components give up the magic smoke). The XITE is pretty hot, but when you turn off SCOPE and let the XITE idle...it gets down to room temp in 15-20 minutes.

How long does it take your system to boot now, from power on to desktop ?crae wrote:I want to minimise the length of time it takes to get a Studio session up and running ....Ta!
And what OS are you running ?
Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
Actualy my studio is in storage since I moved house - waiting to be reinstated in the new extension I am building - hence a lot of naive questions from me all over Planet Z while I have spare time to step back and think about the possibilities of this new blank sheet (see CopperLan, Audinate , and Yamaha 01V96 as a controller questions around Ethernet elsewhere on Planet Z
).
The reason for the boot question is that there is so much gubins around on the PC apart from Scope that I would like to Auto load every time I get started - without all the manual effort to reinstate. Also I load presets for two Scope mixers connected by CC to the Yamaha consol that never restores the presets correctly requiring a good 10 minutes fiddling about - hence the notion of a complete Windows system snapshot and restore a la hibernate.
But I take on board all the comments and will make do
Thanks for all the input - what a great forum.

Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
So the compromise could be:
Close scope
Sleep PC
Xite in idle mode
Wake PC
Start Scope
I will need to try this when studio is built - but I suspect that my DAW will complain about losing its Sound Card - and many DAWs need a reboot when you power down then power up scope - we shall see ( exiting

Do you really want all the background gubbins running when you're making music? I switch everything off including the virus protection when I'm creating.
Also if you use Cubase or whatever it will not like to have the ASIO carpet pulled from under its feet.
Personally I do this:
Leave XITE on (otherwise I forget to switch on until after I've booted the computer-doh!)
Switch computer on
Switch off anti-virus
Load Scope
Load Cubase
It doesn't take very long really. At the end I close Cubase, close Scope and power down the computer. Are you really wanting to leave your DAW program active? I have to say that from working with pro editing suites with Avid it's always a good idea to "turn them off and on again" (the old IT joke) rather than keep them running constantly.
I'm no fan of power saving modes and as garyb has already said should not be used in Scope systems (or any music or video systems as far as I'm concerned).

Re: Is it dangerous to not power off an Xite 1?
I get it - all good advice ....
The PC stuff is stand alone synths - DAW projects - Notepads - etc - but as you say it isn't that much effort - but I think I will power off the PC and leave the Xite on for the reason you mention.
In reality the problem is the fact that the presets containing the CC settings for the two scope mixers that never come back on line whole that is the problem - but I established that this is a known problem a couple of years ago.
I believe that Scope 6 ( you know - that fairy at the bottom of the garden talking to the dragon eating Ambrosia) is rumoured to be native CopperLan enabled which could solve all of my probs

The real problem might be that SCOPE 6 as to be released 1st before it solves anyone´s problems.crae wrote: In reality the problem is the fact that the presets containing the CC settings for the two scope mixers that never come back on line whole that is the problem - but I established that this is a known problem a couple of years ago.

Go to the 'Help / About' box of Scope 5.1 - what do you see ?Bud Weiser wrote: The real problem might be that SCOPE 6 as to be released 1st before it solves anyone´s problems.
