The real Batman !

Post by JoPo »

Amazing ! I didn't know it exists. Some blind (almost at birth) people can find them way like a bat : they make 'cliks' with their mouth and build a sound image of their environment.

And he is not alone to do this.
I can't imagine how he developed his ears ! He should make music !

I've seen a segment about another kid who could do this. The resolution is limited, but he could navigate pretty effectively by making clicks with his mouth. The show did bring in a specialist to test just how accurate the echolocation was, and uncovered some problem scenarios, like detecting big ditches. But physically, I guess it makes sense that echolocation is susceptible to occlusion effects, or any other phenomena that would effect all kinds of waves.

Still, quite amazing though. It's kind of like using the mechanics of binaural recordings at a much higher resolution.

It is extraordinary. I already noticed that the sound I give out was changing by walking in corridors, stairs, outside , etc... But I never thought it was possible for a blind person to build a mental image of his environment and detailed enough to navigate, biking thru it. Just like a bat !
Fantastic.
