Scope Midi Source fault

Post by roy thinnes »

I recently wanted to use the Midi out of my Scope card, which didn't work.
So I hooked up Midi Monitor, and this is what it gets when I press C3 on my Midi keyboard:
Image

Since I got this on two (Win7) partitions, it seems to be a hardware defect.
I'm using the MIDI out of my other card, and Usb, so this no big harm for me.
But maybe a sign of my Scope card getting antique?

(Disconnecting Usb makes no difference; Midi cable is ok, because MidiOut of my other card works)

Has anybody got problems like this?

Where is the midi note coming from?

I had a similar problem and it was due to a broken midi cable.

If i understood right, you have a usb master keyboard connected to one pc, then going out over the midi out of that pc card into the midi in of a pulsar card on another pc.

I think it's something on the connection, the cable, the plug on the card, some dirtness inside the connectors.

If you are 100% sure the master keyboard is ok, i would check above.

it could be a broken wire in the cable whip, too.

it appears that midi is going into Scope ok...

It's not the cable.

I agree, too.
But I'm into buying a midi patchbay anyway (like this), so it's not the end of the world.

Do you have any other keyboard you can try inputting MIDI and see if that does the same thing.

Also just in case you want to use a multimeter to try a continuity test and check the cable whip for issues, see the following link for Plus Plate cable whip pinout diagram. http://forums.planetz.com/viewtopic.php ... =whip+pins

Another useful related page on DIY cable whip showing pins for both Plus Plate (Balanced) and Classic Plate (Project) cards and cables. http://forums.planetz.com/viewtopic.php ... le#p284381

Hope you manage to solve your issue, and let us know what happens :)

Cheers

Roy, I have a similar MIDI interface (M8U), although an older model (Black). It's patchbay capabilities are very simple: one In to all Outs, so check if that's enough for your needs.

I still have a MOTU MIDI Timepiece II (parallel), can be programmed from the front panel, and that's a full-working MIDI patchbay

t_t, tested it with two keyboards, it's the same error.
But, as I already mentioned, it doesn't matter because I use a Midi merger that goes into MidiIn of the other Scope card.
Thanks for the DIY links, but unfortunately I'm rather clumsy when it comes to soldering.
As long as the other parts of the card are doing well, I don't mind.

Hi Tau, that's interesting. Concerning the ESI, you can't route the 8 inputs to designated outputs?
So, this ESI device is more like a 8to1 MIDI merger, with identical Midi signal on all 8 outputs? Bad..
btw, I have an old MotuXt nicely packed in a cardboard box since ~15 years, unused.
As far as I remember, Motu hadn't supplied a working driver for Win98 or XP or whatever...Was a terrible experience, so no Motu for me again (if possible  ).

Roy, I was reading through the manual for the M8U, and this is what it says:

USB mode:
When you select this mode, M8U will be working as a basic MIDI interface. It’s the normal mode.

Thru mode 1:
Input and Output ports will be matched by 1:1. For example, MIDI data from Input 2 directly goes to Output 2.

Thru mode 2: The MIDI data from Input 8 goes to Output 1~8.

Thru mode 3: The MIDI data from Input 1 goes to Output 1~8.

Maybe this works for you. Check the model of the interface before buying, though, the current model is the M8U XL, and the M8U I have (older model-black face) only has 1 "Thru Mode".

I mentioned the old MOTU MTPII because of it patchbaying capabilities. I don't use it on the computer, as it would require a parallel port, but you can configure routings, even load presets, from the front panel, so it can be used as a real MIDI patchbay without the computer. I bought it used a few years ago for close to nothing (no drivers, old interface - good arguments for buying on the cheap), if you can find one for a good price, it could work...

I use a motu micro express...USB seems to work fine with windows 7 x64. Maybe blow the dust off it a give it a whirl. Once programmed, you can disconnect and just use as a router with presets.

I like it because it is one of the few that can be both midi router AND USB interface at the same time. Most turn into dumb mode as soon as you attach a computer, so you have to route inside the computer, adding all the midi latency that comes with it. The motu gives you access to ports from the PC while still doing hardware routing and filtering.

Eanna, edirol is the only one which got usb. 12 years old but with reputation of good timing.
Good info as it seems the only not-motu 8x8 midi patchbay with usb. Watching Ebay...
Tau, many thanks for this information, keeps me from buying this interface; w/o routing possibilities doesn't make much sense.
jk, my ancient Motu looks like this:

so, no usb (hasn't be invented at that time).

Aye, the Edirol is the only one with USB, and it being "the only Midi Patchbay made with USB connectivity", prices can be steep, if you ever find one...

But you can use something like the A880 or the ME80-P, with a Steinberg Midex 8 or other modern 8/8 interface with USB. The Midex 8 is a great interface if you're a Cubase user, with the LTB technology which guarantees sub-millisecond jitter. And Steinberg have released Win 64-bit drivers for it (much to everyone's surprise).

You'll have a few additional Midi leads to get your hands on, but it'd work fine - like you might have an ADAT Interface, a Patchbay, and a Splitter/Mixer for audio in a rack, you'd have something similar for Midi in 2U...
Not because it is easy, but because it is hard...

Just saw this on eBay if that is any use.

Using the UM-880 here myself and it works very well. If you need any info about it let me know and I will try and help if I can :)

Bad that the Edirol guy is selling only in UK.
But thanks for your hints. I'll manage it somehow.

My MOTU is similar (just 4-in 6-out). It even has the MAC serial connector, as well as USB (I think I saw bragging about connecting a PC and MAC via this connection as well). Anyway, the USB works OK for me ;)

roy if you want the ediral i can bid on it for you and can send to you if that makes your life easy

i would recommend opcode x64 as it has current drives and uses printer port midi timing is much better than the usb equivalents
