So, why did Soundcloud block my track?

Post by Neil B »

I recently joined soundcloud & have a couple of tracks up there.

Yesterday, I uploaded another track and within 30 seconds of it being uploaded, I got 2 emails from Soundcloud

"We've been notified that one of your uploads, "chillfactor01-2"
may contain copyright content and we've disabled it. If you believe
you do have permission to use this content, or that a mistake has
been made, please go to
http://soundcloud.com/settings/disputes. "

AND

"Our automatic content protection system has detected that your sound "chillfactor01-2" may contain the following copyright content: "Voyage To Saturn (Pazul Remix)" by Felix Cage, owned by Electronical Reeds. As a result, its publication on your profile has been blocked. "

Now, this is nonsense anyway because nobody had time to listen to it, it sounds nothing like the Voyage to Saturn track and trust me, it does not contain any copyright content.

So how does Soundcloud work - you can't tell me that it "listens" to every track as it uploads and compares it against what is already hanging about in the ether???

I'm fascinated & mystified all at the same time.
Tell me about it .....................

I believe it works like this:

Soundcloud has a big database, with statistic profiles of copyrighted material. The profile consists of frequency information over time.
Each time a track is uploaded the track is being scanned automatically and checked if it resembles any of the profiles in the database.

Your track may very well statistically look like one of the tracks in that profile somehow.

Make a complaint and soundcloud will proppably look deeper into your case.

Thanks Petal
It was no big deal but I was very interested as to how it worked & arrived at that conclusion within a couple of seconds.

This brings up an interesting point. If you use a loop within a track and your work is now copyrighted, then its 'sonic signature' will have an element in common with any track that also uses that loop (if it isn't heavily effected).

According to the hearings at the US Congress, terrorists are now sending messages using note values and combinations of those values to correspond with each other.
So if you were flagged, they probably found a word that bothered them.
For example using the A one octave below 440k is where the alphabet starts. So the A 440 then becomes the letter H, and so on up the scale.
I found that I wrote a loop accidentally saying phuck the irs and it took weeks to post that song.

Hiya Dante

Yes indeed - nearly ALL my tracks contain RMX loops. In this particular instance there were 2 loops from a pack called Aquasonica from Prime Loops
Having said that, I completely deconstructed them and rebuilt them in Trilian & Omnisphere plus Scope dubsub if I remember correctly.
I must have reconstructed them because I changed the lead lines & bass a little bit.
Oh yes, I also used some Melodic Rex loops (heavily effected & reworked) from nine volt audio.

So, why the RMX question?

Surely RMX appears in many commercial trax and by purchasing the RMX and the loop packages you are licenced to use them in any context that you wish.

As I said, it's no big deal 'cos I'm only a hobbyist but I was taken aback. As it happened, it was a track from 2 years ago anyway, and the other track in question was only from 1 year ago.
I only put it up there cos it sounds a bit like tracks ShogunSpy does (he listened on Soundcloud to another track)

Anyway - why RMX loops?
