Win7 32bit install and crackles
Win7 32bit install and crackles
Hello !
I've installed win7 32bit SP1 instead of XP, and i've made bios optimizing, IRQ dispatching, and turned off everything in windows (reset if idle, etc).
Irq is nearly the same as I had with XP, each card has a solo IRQ, and everything about stand by and economy mode is deactivated.
I have all the update for win7 ok.
Sound is ok with asio drivers, but I can't have a clean sound with wave source and 24bit wave source (same result with both).
Foobar and VLC have pops in sound, like small interruptions.
As they twice have the problem, it's not from them.
The project is the same as I had with XP.
DSP latency checker tells me 15/50µs relatively stable, so it seems ok on this side, with no peaks (but I had 5/15µs with windows XP...).
I can work with asio, so it's ok, but it's nearly impossible to listen music or watching a movie.
I even tried to change pci slots for the cards, but nothing changed.
I don't know what I can do more, do you have some ideas please?
Edit: If I remove and replace the "24bit wave source module" or "wave source module", it's ok for a time, but if I relaunch VLC or Foobar, pops come back immediatly.

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
i haven't seen a problem with the 32bit wave driver. there's a known bug with the 64bit driver.
are you having crackles and pops with no audio stream present or only when things are playing? exactly which driver is chosen in those apps? maybe it's a direct show driver instead of the mme driver. i believe you can select a driver or just use the default windows driver. there may alsoi be buffer and preload settings that may help.
i can't imagine why you would need to mess with that stuff, however. i would expect it to work properly. if it were 64bit, i'd just say you are waiting for the new driver like the rest of us.

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Hi Gary
Yes, I don't know why too...Everything has been fine with win7 installation, I knew there will be something wrong after that
I only have crackles while music or movie is playing, and it always disapear if I relaunch the wave source during playback. If I stop VLC or Foobar, I must do it again.
I'm going to try the preload settings !
I don't know about mme or direct show. As it was between VLC and the system, I'd have say direct show...I must look at it...
I just change because I have now a ssd disk, and as I wanted to use it as primary, I thought it was better to use win7 instead XP, and to look at ahci performance too.
But it seems I won't have 4µs on win7 with dpc latency checker
I can have sound with VLC if I choose "audio wave out win32" output, with same result as default, which means I think the first audio output "sonic core" in the windows sound manager playback.
edit: I just tried the output preload of the cards to"big", and nothing changed.
I must say that I have been worried with the win7 sound management...I hope I understood things well by now...
If I don't find why, I must reinstall XP

Do you think I should stay with XP to avoid this kind of thing ?i can't imagine why you would need to mess with that stuff,

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
no, win7 should be solid.
i don't use foobar or vlc, so i can't speak to particulars. i've certainly had those running on clients computers without trouble that i know of.
audiowaveout32 sounds like some kind of direct show connection(connected to the wave driver via windows). that wouldn't be as efficient as the program connecting to the driver directly. it'd be better if the player showed the Sonic|Core driver. VLC's main purpose is to pipe ads and tracking software to teenagers i thought.
i'm not sure what you are referring to about the ssd. win7 is good for ssds, it's true, but what does dpc have to do with it? it boots fast, that's the main thing, right?
in any case, this shouldn't have anything to do with those players glitching, unless you're playing from your ssd and there is a problem with the way the ssd is setup. if that was the case, the whole computer would probably be sluggish. i think it's too little buffer in either windows or the players.

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
DPC has nothing to do with ssd, sure
I meant that I use DPC for checking something i've installed,
My old XP was ok but not completly stable since I installed a bad stuff and never found which one (i'm nearly sure that a "visual microsoft 20xx thing" has done the job !)
That's why i installed at least win7 with my new ssd and ahci.
Do you know what I must do with the exclusive mode into the audio win7 frontend ?

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Ok, I have it...but I don't understand how I got it
....
I think by putting the 2nd audio wave driver into the sound management as default, and then choose direct wave output device into VLC and foobar.
But it's now called "speaker1 and 2" instead wave driver1 and 2, that disturbed me during some times.
But that's strange because the sound is coming out the 1st wave device into win7 wound management, so I thought it was default.

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
disable it(exclusive mode).
you want various programs to be able to use the driver whenever they want to. you don't want a program deciding to own the driver for good.
asio only runs with one app controlling the driver, but the wave driver gets used by everyone. and it likes it.
what did you get?

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
ok, I had disabled exclusive mode before, as I understood it as you described.
It seems to be ok now, I don't have to reload wave device anymore
I can play foobar and vlc together without problems.
I hope it will stand till and after next boot
ok, so to finish it....reboot!

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles

yes, speaker 1 and speaker 2 is what windows calls it. yeah.
usually it is #2 that is the first one in the routing window, according to windows, so #2 is usually the correct default.
glad it works!

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Yes !
It is working !
Thanks Gary again and again
Do you want to mary me Gary !?
As we can all be married together now in France, I think the best way for me is to be married to a Sonic core /Scope expert
It will be a marriage in name only of course

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles

hahaha!
i glad that i was able to help...
Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Do you know if there's a way to have only one "speaker" device into the win7 sound manager ?
I went into the scope card setting to have only 1 wave driver output and clarify things, but into the configuration of VLC and Foobar, I continue to see 2 devices named "speaker", and in windows too.
As I always use only one, that could be nice to see only one into windows.
Do I need to reboot ?

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
you might have to do it manually by removing entries in the registry. it wouldn't be that hard to find out exactly where to look, but it's not really worth the trouble.
you made the change in the properties window for the Scope card in the device manager? that should do it. you probably need a restart for windows to learn the news, however.

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Ok, thanks !
In fact now I can surely manage them with each app, it should be ok

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Did you set the audio priority to background process (rather than applications) in control panel advanced performance ?
Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Yes thanks Dante, I've set it properly

Re: Win7 32bit install and crackles
Just want to report my experience with win7 and 5.0
The crackles problem continues, with the same solution to reload the wave driver module, or tweaking the output of the player, but it never stands.
Sometimes, it works well during a time, but never long, and when audio player is ok, the video player turns crackles etc.
After trying to tweak win7 to make it work, I surrender. In fact I can't tweak it more now
I think this ASUS P7P55D motherboard doesn't react well with win7 and Scope together.
And it's not completly smooth. It wasn't perfect with XP, but much better. The dpc latency was perfect and everything smooth. But the computer latency doesn't seem to be the source of the crackles as it's stable and relatively low, no other hardware seems to interact with the scope cards.
I'm wondering if it could be better with scope 5.1, as I run with 5.0, but it seems the wave module and win7 don't like my motherboard.
I'm not sure something has evolved from 5.0 to 5.1 on this part.
Concerning the masterverb test, I can load the same amount (12), but I got pci bandwith messages at the 7th one till the last one.
Maybe the win7 driver of the P7P55D are not well finished as the XP ones ?
As I wanted to try the ahci management, I can see that advantages of having it is less interesting than the other inconvenients of win7. This iastore.sys driver is not working well.
...maybe I'm going back to XP...
Gary, I want to divorce now !!!
I take the dog and the xite.......
