Funny indeed, as some claim it's a ten year old joke (I googled the story, http://www.sodahead.com/living/man-tell ... &q=&esrc=s ).

But let's assume the story is real.
What does that proof?
At least that a burglar alarm is a different thing from a shooting, for sure after all the roaring shooting incidents in the US in the past.
Which is -to some degree- understandable, but then it's also politics indeed.

Yet a citizen has the right to get protection from the police, so yes, it would be a shame if the police wouldn't appear for 'just' a burglar alarm.
Dunno, what's this all about?
At best it supports the proposition of more tax for more police to protect the citizens.

In general this is a US discussion, in my and other countries the situation regarding the public task of the police is far more better than in the US, and the public discussion about the subject also.

Let's discuss on content, without the usual acid.

Hubird even in a large heavily numbered Police force the cops usually just come by and clean up the mess.
They cannot protect you.
Most people accept this and take the appropraite steps.
I have many hunting rifles but not good for self defense. In the 90s home invasions became a problem until the gang responsible got wasted one night from entering the wrong home.
They usually target women and the elderly as they aren't into confrontations where weapons might be.
I bought a Shotgun and have never used it except in practice, but round 1 is rock salt w/ a big bang, then bird shot for the legs if need be, after that it's double ought, and by that time they need such a violent response.
The world really sucks, you can accept that reality or rely on the Police who promise to find your killer, as that's about the best they can do.

what does it prooooove?

nothing. it's funny. it's also the way the police are. if you need them, they're busy. if you take care of the problem your self, they are like flies on shinola.

actually, that story may be made up, but that's how the police act around here. they're too busy to write a report for a fender bender, but if there's a gunshot, the cops are everywhere in minutes.

actually, i might feel sorry for the guy who gets shot, but if he's broken into someone else's place and is stealing that person's stuff, i'd say he had it coming.

shooting incidents? really, they don't happen except when mental patients take anti anxiety meds for too long. EVERY.SINGLE. major shooting has involved psych meds. just 40 years ago, it was common for kids to bring rifles to school to go shooting in the fields. 60 years ago, almost everyone everywhere had guns. even Lucy and her friends in the Mertz's apartments had guns. murderous people are dangerous with an ice pick, a kitchen knife, a hammer, a baseball bat, a punch and a kick, etc. swords are much more dangerous in close quarters...

anyway IT WAS A JOKE. the article is a joke. i thought that was implied in the title.

oh, by the way, Jim is correct. the police come and clean up the mess if they can. the only person who can defend you most of the time, is you.

Smart criminals are caught by detectives, dumb criminals are caught by Patrol men.
Glad we have Police but I only rely on them for roadblocks, getting cats from trees.
Our firefighters are way better mentally and physically.
Last time I got grabbed I obeyed the Cops as I am a good citizen, but I jaywalked as I didn't want to miss a Bus.
3 cops pulled up behind him while they ran my name through.
They all had flatop haircuts, were fat slobs, and talked polite to me which I don't like when I know you're trying to screw me any way you can.
So I just had a little fun while I stood there cuffed and said hey you guys all see the same barber and work out at the same gym....?

Well since I have no record, I guess I ain't a dumb criminal, but what a waste of time and money as they scurry to try and reach their quota since that's their real gig any ways. Revenue creators, as if we don't get bent over enough by these wealthy redistributors.

yes, the police are more interested in creating revenue than helping anyone, especially in the city. they mostly give traffic tickets and parking tickets.

Don't you guys have all that automated by now ? Here, speeding detection is all electronic, and for parking, they have sensors under the asphalt and specialised 'grey ghosts' for issuing manual parking tickets. We have cop cars equipment with camera that can identify 6 license plates a second and match to database to pick up unlicensed or banned drivers. Hoon cars are impounded and crushed, and the crushing is also well automated in assembly line fashion. The hoon car drivers are easily influenced from the days when the hoons in 'Fast and Furious' were the bad guys rather than the heroes. Now they think its cool to speed as long as you counteract that with a good deed for the day like mugging a would be bandit batman style

yes, we have that.

we also have a legal principle that states that one has the right to face and examine one's accuser, something that you can't do with an automated system. in addition, automated systems are run by third parties who don't have any actual legal authority to fine anyone. because of these things, automated systems are beatable. they're around but not entirely enforcable.

...and I believe police cannot be witness against themselves in court, so on rare occasion you hear of cases where people will fight tickets and win.

Soon enough cars will all have governors that can be triggered remotely, you'll never really own your car, everyone's car will Be rented by the mile and you'll be told when and where you can 'convey' on toll roads.

no, the cops can be called into court, but if they don't show, it's an automatic dismissal.

yeah, i've heard that lousy plan, too. sometimes computers don't make us more free and happy.

dude, i think you responded to the wrong thread. i don't see the relevance of the comment.

is it really necessary to get this wound up, except in good fun? has someone in overalls done something to you for you to hate all of the people in an area without any regret?

Well Garyb, I admit that I tried to convince Nestor to let the war thread die out, especially when he was the only one left making new contributions.
But speaking about me as the censor you have to notice that it was John who didn't want that systematic (conspiricy) stuff 'on Planetz' venu', and that he locked the thread.

My call not to start a new, second 'gun thread' has to do with my wish to get a more friendly atmosphere on Planetz.
You might have noticed the different tone of my posts, and me not reacting on everything.
A discussion is nice, I'm always in for it, but I feel there's so much vitriol in it...and it looks already to be endless.
We can do better.

no, again you misinterpret things.

this is NOT a gun thread, although i can go there if you want. your futile attempts to censor me can easily ruin the good vibes here, if that's really what you want to do, and speaking of ruining the vibe, the reason that thread was locked was strictly a result of your bitching giving John a headache. it wasn't because some sacred line was crossed.

stop trying to create strife.
