last friday, i was playing around with FSP, and when i wanted to launch cubase, it did nothing... just a quick flash in a corner somewhere, but then nothing.

i tried lots of things: reinstalled cubase (no result), replaced my DAW partition with a back up (no result), up to the point that i throw off everything!!! reinstalled OS, mouse software, FSP, Cubase and still, cubase just won't start... i thought it had something to do with SFP (but that works fine) so i tried to install pulsar v2.04, but when i try to do that, i get an error telling me the hardware can't be found.

i'm starting to get a little desperate here... i hope that in my future reply i can go  instead of  (never had a virus before, could this be one?)
so, anyone a clue??? phew, my first real DAW crisis... something to be happy about?

mac OS9.1, SFP, Cubase 5.1r1 (which i've tried to install so many times now, that the CD is almost 'gone'... no joke)

mmm: number of posts:333 looks like some dark forces got halfway passed my system door

borg,
Blimey dunno what to suggest. Sounds like a reformat is in order. Also from various sources here I would suggest the following:
Before any software reinstallation try physically reseating the Pulsar board in the PCI slot to make sure you're getting a good connection.

Use Mac OS9.2.2

After you install make a copy of the cset.ini file (found in App:Bin) as this corrupts in 3.01 and may do in 3.1. When SFP crashes just drop the prestine copy into App:Bin overwriting the corrupted one.

Use OMS 2.3.7

Reinstall Cubase.

Dunno if any of that will help as it sounds like a VST problem, but at least you'll know you have a clean system. What's you're full system spec?

thanks for the input, guys.

right now, what i did:

kicked EVERYTHING off the computer (of course using Mac install CD), 'erased disk' (4 of them: i have two seagate barracuda's, one of them is divided into 4 partitions, the other is used only for data, like audio. this one's divided into three partitions). then i used 'drive setup' just to be sure.
ok, so now i must have a clean HD, or could there be some other thing lurking in the shadow, like a virus? (i don't have any anti virus stuff, must be my mac arrogance  any suggestions or advice?)
yesterday, i installed a fresh mac os9.1 on one of the partitions, did all the obvious changes and installed internet, printer,... just to keep in touch with Z...
then i did the same on the second partition, where my DAW is supposed to be. SFP installed normally imo. then i tried to add cubase 5.1r1 from CD. it goes no further than '731 files to go'. if i copy the CD to HD, i'm able to install cubase :???: but i still get no answer when i knock it's door. being rather frustrated, i threw off everything again (i must say, only the drive containing OS).
i tried everything: installing before tweaks, after tweaks, in between,...

this morning i spent some hours browsing for an answer. but nothing really valuable came up.

i just made a fresh OS install, and wanted to download SFP again, and maybe cubase if it's available to eliminate possible CD errors. and of course i popped in here to check the Z. so that's where i am right now: nowhere. i realized i forgot to assign, lets say 200Mb to cubase. maybe this could solve my problem. i doubt it, because when i just started out, i didn't know ANY of the optimalisation tricks, and everything worked back then... oh, yeah, the cset.ini file: i did in fact change it to a copy i made in the past, but there was no real need for it, because SFP is working fine.
ah well, when all this is over, i'll at least know a bit more how computers work... i hope

system:
B/W G3 450Mhz, 512Mb RAM
2 seagate barracuda IV HD's (40, 80GB)
Mac OS9.1 (9.2.2 upgrade is said to be useless on a G3)
pulsarII/pro pack/SFP, Cubase 5.1.r1/r2 (installing the patch over the original brings no solution), OMS 2.3.8 (has always worked for me. i have 2.3.7, used it with the same success as 2.3.

my atari is justed gathering dust on a shelf, less than 5 feet away... mmm, just like my BIG soundcraft mixer. the nordrack2 is always close at hand, so are my outboard FX processors... too bad i sold my drummachines

brace up it must be fixable! i know you erased but did you reformat?(that's the only way to insure that nothing is lurking) it's a VERY bad idea to be on the net w/o virus(and firewall especially w/dsl) protection.there's lotsa bad stuff out there! i don't like to have internet on my daw.(just extra crap to eat resources!)

hi Borg,
i almost have your setup and have the same problems sometimes...
Try to make a toast img of cubase and make a new cd ,i had the same shit with vst and eventually the orginal cd was even dodgy;i had lots of problem with vst/32 5.1 so i went back to 5.0 r3 .Sometimes i also experience cubase resources file corruption.
So for the last time (i hope) format your hd ,zap the PRAM several times, install mac os(9.1 is ok),remove all extensions you don't need, try to download carbon lib 1.4 (or i can email it to you),first install vst, then oms, then pulsar.
If you can ,install mac os also on another partition or hd and use that one for internet,so that you can disable a maxium of extension from the "main" hd.(like internet stuff, open gl,quickdraw, quicktime musical instruments, firewire(if u don't need it)
It's very important that as soon as you experience problems with vst you trash it's prefernces and the autoload song. Make a new one, save and restart vst.
i hope it works .

thanks Iore for the advice! (will get back to you on email...) i'll have a closer look at your suggestions tomorrow (euh, in a few hours, it's 5:30 in the morning here) because i need a well deserved rest!!!
i'm back in business again!!!

i don't know what caused the problems in the first place. anyway, i got it up and running again. i first copied the cubase cd to HD, installed it from there, but it just kept at '731 files to go' like the last few days. i quit smoking a few days ago and started looking for that last bit of tobacco i had somewhere... when i came back... cubase was installed!!!! before i launched cubase, i assigned 200Mb of RAM instead of the default setting (something i forgot the previous efforts  and maybe this did the trick) and all was fine!!!

oh my dog! i'm really happy! i was really grumpy the last few days. the f**king car drivers in the city will have noticed  when i passed them with my MTB (the only thing that could give me some joy in these dark days)
