Cubase 6.5
Cubase 6.5
Well I just installed Cubase 6.5.
First impressions:
People complain that this is a .5 upgrade but the cost is only $49 (from version 6) and the advantages are not minor so I don't see how they can have a gripe.
New Synths: In the past Cubase synthesizers have always sucked but they tend to get incrementally better (small increments). With Cubase 6.5, they have made a giant leap forward. I would not say these can replace the best hardware synthesizers but they are quite useful. Turn off the built-in effects and they still sound good.
Padshop: A granular synthesizer. This is my favorite of the two. Plenty of great spacey patches which can be manipulated into totally different sounds. I only wish you could import your own wav files into it.
Retrologue: An analogue synth similar to the classic Roland SH101. It has a clear defined sound with balls.
Warp Audio Quantize: Although not as sexy as the new synthesizers, this could be the most important new feature and to my surprise, it really works. At last musicians like me don't have to be very good. We can fake it.
There are other improvements in 6.5 but those are the ones that most interest me.
Please don't post any snide remarks that your sequencer has done these things for years. I really could care less about what you have. I have been using Cubase since the Atari days and appreciate that I know it so well, I don't have to think about how to do things when I use it. I am not about to switch to another product. For me, it is perfect.

You mean, "couldn't care less". Sorry for the correction, but this is one of my pet peeves and I mean to stamp it out wherever I see it.braincell wrote: I really could care less about what you have.
As to the other stuff, whatever works for you. I don't think anyone cares enough about your set-up to make snide remarks. I use Cubase 5.5 but not much more than as a tape/MIDI recorder.
Re: Cubase 6.5
Thanks, I stand corrected.
Just got done with the new studio layout. I noticed that the Scope synths sound much better connect directly to the output with no mixer. It's more transparent and clean. There is a new filter and EQ in Cubase 6.5 designed to be played live and the Flexor sounded great through it. It has a smooth sound, hard to describe but it reminds me of the Padshop sound. It takes the harshness off the modular and sounds better to me.

There's going to be no-one left on the forum to block soon. Funny how you're the one who initially said you don't care about our set-ups, yet when I throw the same back at you, you have a kiddy tantrum. Re: Cubase 6.5
Matthias Klag is behind the new synths in Cubase 6.5 - he's absolutely no stranger to the Scope world, since him and Klaus did the DSP coding for Scope.braincell wrote:With Cubase 6.5, they have made a giant leap forward. Matthias and Klaus went to Wizoo after Creamware (Others joined NI) - they did the Wizoo Reverb. Digidesign bought Wizoo and they did the synths package for ProTools (Air series).

Interesting piece of history there, thanks for that I like DSP historyWarp69 wrote: Matthias Klag is behind the new synths in Cubase 6.5 - he's absolutely no stranger to the Scope world, since him and Klaus did the DSP coding for Scope.

Re: Cubase 6.5
He also dodges the kids at MESSE from Arturia that wonder how in the hell did you do this....and that.
I am glad he came back for Solaris, you can immediately tell that the Kind had returned.
When I become a 1%'r, the first thing on my list is to do a 50/50 deal with Holger and Klaus for some certain chores, and then sell the upgrade to feed the poor staving children of the world, and buy the Iranian Mullahs a peace of Ass so they'll mellow out a little.

Re: Cubase 6.5
I quite like the new morphing filter, nice and smooth... quite interesting and useful modern sounding filter.
pad shop is nice.. i was kind of hoping you could import your own samples..maybe in the future..
The retro synth is good.. a bit boring.. at first play..but cubase 6.5 was worth the upgrade for me..
cubase is really holding its ground, scope on pci is just hanging on..but it is a nice backbone to the hardware.
Xite.. needs total integration until i spend the $$..
and now it has the Apollo to compete with !

I vote for the Xite TI 2013
If we make it there.....

Re: Cubase 6.5
the Apollo is not necessarily a competitor. they are different products. both can work together.
complete integration with the sequencer might be convienient, but it would mean giving up much of what makes Scope special, realtime operation and routing.

Re: Cubase 6.5
I notice some of the Halion VST's in Cubase are named something 'shop'. Snare Shop, Kick Shop. Clearly a rip off from Jeff Beck who came up with his 'Guitar Shop' album which was released 1989 - years before any VST's existed.lunaorbit wrote:pad shop is nice.. i was kind of hoping you could import your own samples..maybe in the future..

Scope PCI rocks hard for me. Even more so since GaryB gave me the compressed air solution.lunaorbit wrote:cubase is really holding its ground, scope on pci is just hanging on..but it is a nice backbone to the hardware.
I dont use XTC mode if thats what you mean. Other than that though, XITE integrates my whole studio together (including the old PCI cards).lunaorbit wrote:Xite.. needs total integration until i spend the $$..
Re: Cubase 6.5
well i have had heaps of problems with the pci boards since going to windows 7 64 bit.
pci overloads (in scope), vstin.sys blue screens (in xtc).
anyway....
now i just use the boards in XTC mode, as sound card only, no DSP software.
Its solid like this, rock solid..ADAT spdif all working very well, but i do miss the sonic core effects.
I was thinking of trying this motherboard.
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A87/
With AMD 8 core.
When i feel like a reinstall.......
AMD is a friend of mine.

Re: Cubase 6.5
@Warp 69 Thanks for the info.
@lunaorbit I found that the best way to automate the Morphing Filter is with a Wacom Tablet. The little Wacom Bamboo is $80 USD.
The best thing about Cubase 6.5 is the quantize audio works! It's in the quantize section where you quantize midi (make sure to check warp audio). It will slice the audio, warp it and quantize it with one click. Much simpler than using the audio edit window. I never had any luck quantizing audio that way.

In Cubase 5.0, Warp the audio in a segment, then 'Select All'. With all notes selected, moving one note so it 'click' into its nearest semitone will cause ALL selected notes to move to the nearest semitone.braincell wrote:The best thing about Cubase 6.5 is the quantize audio works! Works for me in 5.0. Is that all Audio Quantise does (just with less mouse clicks) ?
Re: Cubase 6.5
Not sure I follow you but it basically it is a way to quantize audio as easily as MIDI.dante wrote:In Cubase 5.0, Warp the audio in a segment, then 'Select All'. Re: Cubase 6.5
"Quantizing audio" - does that mean pitch wise, or rhythm wise ?
In MIDI terminology, 'quantise' refers to rhythm, eg make all notes start on the nearest 16th note or whatever.
But the term "pitch quantize" could imply moving all notes to the nearest semitone (or nearest 'scale' note).
So in Cubase 5.0 if you 'select all' in the audio window (after selecting warp mode) and move one note to pitch, all other selected notes get moved to the nearest semitone pitch as well.
Sounds like the same thing as what 6.5 is doing, but with less mouse clicks. Thats if what you're referring to in Cubase 6.5 is 'pitch quantize' (rather than rhythmic quantize).
