ok, now i'll try not to be cynic.
i bought sts3000 when i had p3 and 12 dsp - then they have sence.
now i have p4/2.2 and 6 dsp and for me is not good idea to spend dsp for any sampler anymore.
in future i will use ni-kontakt sampler
with much more possibilities, better performances, comfortable, stand alone and vst integrated, light cpu usage....

btw: how much dsp you need to run 64poly-sts4000 and how much this dsp cost?
use dsp for nice synths, efects.... not for bugy&uncomfortable samplers! .... ooooops am i cynic again?

btw2: i will give sts3000 for 45€, but nobody want to buy - why? :???:

I think CW has tried to develop everything themselves and is now paying the price. While their effects, basic platform software and synths are first rate, their samplers and Modular system have fallen behind. No one can do everything....

ps: my STS3000 going cheap. Only 44 Euros

Well to be honest i dont like at all cream fx, they are kinda joke...
And also on their compressor the reduceed db number doesnt work !!!
Plus they dont know yet the difference between a limiter and a compresor, same device with different name...
Reverb is metallic and not to be put close to timeworks to avoid shame
Sampler are modelled closely to akai series i find them not too bad but with some problems tthat prevents them from being really usable...

I wish they stop copying the wrong hw when making device eheheheh

And that finally they improve modular following our suggestions...

They should stop making samplers and fx until they got top class products or find developers but that leads to a toolong topic....

yes, BIT01  that's why (between others) i sold my second pulsar board. but, to be honest i found in last time that optimaster, psyQ, earlyfirst's PT-free-96k... working and sounds nice. also synths! i think that's sfp is great too! livebar
i plan to buy another pulsar again, but not to run cw's samplers, cw's car, cw's helicopters, cw's tenks and airplanes....

Award for lamest tip in the section?

I love the STS series, no matter what sandrob says. Totally realtime controlable, quick, and combined with King of Blue's free utilities, very powerful. Yes, there are a few things that might make it even better, but as it is, the STS series is an inspiring tool that I rank very highly in the world of software samplers, not the least of which it actually samples.

But I understand everyone is different and maybe this device is too confusing for many (it works more like hardware than software).

Myself and other people have used this sampler exclusively for tracks; leaving an EMU & Kurzweil sitting on the sidelines for a couple tracks... so take all this for what it's worth.

It screwed up a couple of my projects.. but heck, I still have to use it anyway.. much better than loading up samples into my Triton. But who knows, sts is the first serious sampler that I've used.. there might be better ones. But 'till I get enough cash, I ain't complainin'. Actually, the ability to not crash projects at random intervals would be nice. hehe.

I wonder if CW would make a sts3000 with more filters. It's kind of a drag to have to use sts5000 just to use those filters, and just loading sts5000 is more dsp expensive too. The filters in sts3000 aren't too responsive.. and having 0-999 level of Q isn't too smart either.

If STS crashes your machine, there is a very very good chance you have a RAM/memory problem - either cheaper ram sticks, or RAM timings set too aggressively for your RAM sticks in your computer's BIOS. Try lowering your FSB (Front Side Bus), memory divisor, or CAS timings (from 2 back up to 3), and see if that fixes it. Try isolating which ram stick has the problem by removing and testing one stick. Since the STS series uses large portions of your RAM, it might expose problems that don't materialize with less ram intensive uses. For reference, I can't even think of one time the STS has crashed my system and I've been using it for years (since right when it came out actually).

nono, I meant the notorious textbox bug. In use, sts is a breeze. I actually use it quite often these days.

Award for lamest tip in the section? can i write in croatian?! it will be less lamest - i promise

so, problems with pulsar's samplers starts with sample players crashes in 2.0 version. you remember that bug when windows crashed if you try to close pulsar with sample players with sounds inside?!
then i bought sts3000 but for me they never works smooth. i never had stability problems, but always some minor bug buging me.
when i instal xp my cd's didn't works if is sts in project and i had crackles on note off. then i back to win98 again.
now with sfp sts play normaly but it's imposible to load akai sample from file browser or directly from sts. also i have stability problems - sometimes when i try to set something: polyphony (even when i select a voice from the pulldown menu) or whatever my sfp closed with some "we sorry message". also it was imposible to set something for sts in livebar if sts is not on the top of the livebar (classic mode)
i believe that's not my fault.

now - from the moment when i try kontakt and delete sampler folder i feel much better.

I'll second that. STS is nearly indespensible for me most of the time. Yeah, of course it could be improved, but what can't? Oh well, to each his/her own. I guess that Sandrob, the croation sensation, has his mind set.

Sub, your advice on checking my RAM & settings gives me a bit hope, but not much. I'm definitely not going to change the 500MB Samsung-DDRAM on this machine because they're very good on all other programs. Maybe will be lucky on my next computer that sits in the cellar waiting for some bits and pieces to be finished.
Anyway, I will wait if the STS works on that machine, beacause, after all, you're right, the STS as a concept has an interesting and respectable hardware-sampler-feel to it.
It's just so very annoying that it crackles on this particular (standard) setup.
Little hope I have but sadly will start to safe bucks for the NI-sampler.
