A16 ultra channel issue

Post by Inferman »

Hi there! :)

After moving to the new studio the 2nd mono IN-channel has a constantly peep sound in my A16 Ultra converter.
Could it be curable (relatively easy) with or without autopsy? ))

Thanx!

not following you. are you talking about channel 2 input? It makes a "peep" sound?

1.) Are you using ADAT or Z-Link? If ADAT, is the A16 clock master, or is SCOPE?

2.) Can you check all channels, to see what noise comes through on each?

Well... hardware inputs are free (without any synth connections)
A16 ultra meter shows nothing
Just when I link Scope ADAT source with Mixer peep signal appears.

1) Yes, ADAT optic cables (tried different) in ADAT sync mode (Master is Scope card)
2) Each channel except problem one is quiet and ok.

Please, look at the picture I've prepared.
Also I've attached the .mp3 with current peep sound from ADAT source.

Send audio into the other channels. See if you only get peeps on the even channels. Also, check the channel you do get through ok, and see the volume level of it, and whether it is 3-6db below what you expect.

Last, check the master clock frequency...is it 48kHz or 44.1kHz? Check if the peeps/noise only appears at one of those settings.

I have similar problems, only at 48kHz, which is why I ask.

Wow!
jksuperstar, thanx a lot :)

Amazing, but I've just switched Sample Rate from 44.1 to 48 (peep still sounded) then to 96 and then back to 44.1... Peep sound has gone ))) even after reboot

I'm glad you got it working, that's a good idea going up through 96k and then back down to 44.1/48. I'll have to try that to see if it clears up my problems!

Interesting. Let us know the outcome of these tests, especially if toggling to 96 then back down clears any issue that is specific to odd or even channels.

Dante, if you could do the same, that'd be great. I know you have had the same issue ;)

Unfortunately, peep sound is back after restarting Scope ((
It doesn't appear after reboot A16 hardware, but appears after restarting windows or Scope :(

After changing sample rate it disappears again...

it sounds like there's a sync problem.
it could be the cable, dirt in the port on either end, or any of the hardware connected.
it's not very likely that it's software and the settings are all or nothing, once you have one master and one slave.

the thing is, you know what to do to get everything locked up, so that's a good thing....there's not much else to do besides cleaning the ports and trying another cable.

Thanx Gary.

Yea, I agree, my hardware connection system is terribly simple, A16 works now just as analog output for monitors )) and entire channels worked fine until just one of them has such annoying sound.

I thought it was internal A16 chip defect or something with digital output but after resampling it really disappears so it's probably any other problem, sync problem as a variant )))

Yeah I will, but I will get that compressed air thingy that GaryB mentioned first, to do a before and after test.
