My DIY Acoustic Panel Project
Just wanted to share a DIY project I'm working on to improve my mixing area, got about 18 acoustic panels of Owens Corning 703 to treat my humble bedroom studio, The link below is mew making Portable Free standing panels made with PVC pipe, no glue or nails just a pipe cutter and a little sewing.

the idea is not to eliminate all relections, btw.
what you need for mixing is diffusion more than anything, besides bass traps.
those panels would be really best for isolating instruments and their mics.

Right. I had only planned to use 6 or 7 panels for the mix area, 3 behind me made in the PVC style, 2 behind the speakers, and 1 or 2 for the cloud.
a few scattered through out the room in key spots if needed, then I intended to make some bass traps with 2 or 3 sheets of the 703 ala Ready Acoustics Gobo style.(I haven't worked out the PVC design for those yet, gonna be fun)
Diffusers hmmm... Must do more research.

Shelves, ornaments on the wall and wooden slats (alternating open, closed and maybe cork covered/filled holes) make for great diffusion.
Basically what GaryB is saying is you want to equalize the room by 'diffusing' early reflections enough that you don't have coherent nodes and valleys in the upper & midrange registers, and then you focus on enough bass trapping to 'smooth out' the low end a fair bit. A completely dead room is as undesirable as a room with bad reflections & highly peaky low end response.
Spacing your midrange traps out from the wall can increase their effectiveness on lower mid registers too btw (didn't read that whole linked thread to see if that was covered).

would having a bunch of garbage scattered about the room have the same desirable effect? 
Nice project Yish. Thanks for sharing. I wonder why the commercial acoustic foam panels are so darn expensive. Seems they are way overpriced. Is it special super sound absorbing foam or is it basically the same material as packing foam just formed into neat shapes?
(I do realize the shapes help diffuse the sounds
