Kontakt 4 gurus... how the hell do I modulate mod amount?

Post by kensuguro »

I usually never mess with kontakt presets, but for this particular project I need to build a banjo. I'm basing it off some free sf2 banjo I found, just need to fix the filter mods and a bit of pitch mod.. but it looks like in Kontakt I can't scale the Mod amount of say, ADSR to filter cut off by velocity. (in modular, it'd just be a VCA or signal * normalized value) Is this really a limitation?

I also wonder if I'm thinking about this in the wrong way simply because I'm used to modular and also dsp programming.. because I guess I can approximate the mod amount (EG amount) being scaled by velocity if I mod the sustain value by velocity. That way, whatever sustain value the EG rests at is scaled, and the overall impression is that the EG effect is scaled by EG. (based on the final resting value) Sorry, tough things to explain via words...

For your example, load the filter in the group insert slots.
Look at the filter module, lower left corner is an array called mod, click it, then add modulator.

Click it and add the ADSR. It should be linked to the cutoff freq by default.
You can see the mod destination on the right side of this modules.

Also in the module is a quick jump button, it takes you to the envelope you've just loaded. All modulators you use in your instrument can be found in the modulation area of your instrument. But quick jump is the fastest way. (Also there is a jump back from the f.e. adsr)

Once you see your filter envelope, you can notice another mod button this time on the envelope module.
-Add modulator -> velocity or CC .... -> This time the Attack time of the envelope is the default mod destination, choose intensity.

Voila

Ah, duh, overlooked intensity.. Would have been strange if it didnt have such an elementary mod route... My bad

Yes, they add and add things and due this it gets somehow complicated to reach everything fast.

I would like to see a list of all used modules of your Kontakt instrument, sorted in a menu list like the automation list. There a usual modulation matrix would be cool.

Good timing Jimmy. I installed it yesterday evening, version 5.01. I play with it at the moment w/ some 3rd libraries.
All libs were found fine, I haven't deinstalled version4 before.

I use the 64bit version w/ samplitude X 64bit, it's smooth.
Haven't tested the new filters and other newbies like SSL etc. But all looks safe so far.
