tripleDAT conversion feature from AATranslator

Post by BRG »

I know a bunch of you old tripleDAT users have wished for this, as have I. Tons of old triple .arg/.tdm/.tds etc. files and no way to recover without reviving your old W98 ISA machine...which I recently did. I contacted Michael at AATranslator after needing to convert a ProTools session into Reaper (which his AATranslator does beautifully, along with most major DAW application transfers). I asked him if he'd be willing to look at this ancient format to see if he could do it. Up for a challenge, he agreed and he's in the process of completing the first rounds of making this available to us. I've sent him a couple sessions in tripleDAT format and he's already got the arrangement translation down.

Soon we'll be able to plug our old tripleDAT songs into modern programs without spending a huge chunk of cash on things like TrackCaster. I'll keep you posted.

Dude that's great news. There a few Triple DAT users here in LV who would be very happy to use that.

It's almost done...the AATranslator update that will not only correctly lay out your .arg files in a modern DAW but will also convert the .tds/.tdm files to wav. Michael has been great to work with and has this to say:

We are gearing up for a new release of AATranslator.

A summary of features included in the next version include:
1. Improved ADL (AES31) import & export especially in relation to Nuendo
2. Improved Steinberg Track Archive (XML) conversions
3. Improved reading of looped clips in Reaper
4. Corrected error if Video was last track in Reaper
5. More informed conversions (msgs & Media Tab)
6. Progress messages should no longer get hidden below other windows
7. Improved PT conversions including hidden tracks and playlists
8. Improved CMX-EDL conversions eg now read audio volume values
9. OMF export now has an option to convert 32bit to 24bit as well as other improvements
10. We have added import support for TripleDAT (ARG) files and can convert TDM & TDS audio files to wav.
11. Improved FCP xml import with still more to do
12. Numerous bug fixes/enhancements across most daws

Great news...the latest beta I'm testing is 99.9% working beautifully!!! All the X-fades, volumes, positions and audio are converting with absolute accuracy. I'm amazed to see these old tripleDAT arg sessions flow into Reaper with such ease and precision. One old tripleDAT client of mine already responded with an interest in reworking some old sessions. Just having a batch conversion tdm/tds to wav tool is nothing short of incredible and something I've wanted for a looooong time. Thank you Michael at AATranslator!!

It's as done as it's gonna get for now and nearly perfect. You may need to do minor tweaks on some samples having extended/stretched tails, but the audio converts, lines up correctly and allows you to breathe new life into old tripleDAT sessions without reviving an old tripleBoard or obsolete PC. Michael will be including all the tripleDAT supported features in his next release. You can find it here: http://www.aatranslator.com.au/
