Eventide SPACE reverb

I ordered the Eventide SPACE reverb. It hasn't arrived yet. It's a stomp box. Expensive for a stomp box, cheap for an Eventide. They have some other stomp boxes too. Seems like it would be good for synth as well as guitar. No digital or XLR jacks but it has USB for computer knob control and updates. I laugh at the "updates" because firmware upgrades are rare on anything I have bought and usually don't do much.

I'm currently using Cubase reverb. I'm thinking it can't be as good or as weird and wonderful. This will round out my home studio nicely.

However, the Sustainiac looks interesting. The eBow only sustains one string at a time.

I draw controller changes using the pencil or the line tool. That is precision effect control so rotary knobs, while cool in the showroom, are kind of stupid for my studio.

I'm an Eventide addict.

I have the Pitchfactor, Timefactor, and Eclipse (I bought them all used on ebay). Their all amazing when looped in/out of each other.

I passed on the SPACE because it doesn't have enough default algorithms, but DOES have some of the best 'verbs from their H series and I already have them in the Eclipse anyways.

Well maybe someone who got the new SDK can make us a Scopentide. With glowing knobs and rotary tubes please.

Rut but reverb is the most important for me. I would love to have the other Eventides. It's nice that it has some strange things that are not reverb, a little pitch shift, amp simulation and crazy patches. I liked Shimmer and Blackhole a lot in the demo.

I have a Fernandes Ravelle Sustainer (see my avatar) and three E Bows. They're different effects for different times. Sometimes you need one string solo stuff - the E Bow excels for expressivenes here, plus you learn to play more of the neck if you want avoid constant string swapping. The Fernandes gives a different effect - good for chords obviously, but you have to be more aware of damping otherwise you can get strings vibrating that you don't want. So even though I have the Fernandes I still like to 'Bow too as I feel slightly more in control (there again I've had an E Bow since 1984 so I feel more at home with that than the Fernandes Sustainer at the moment).

That Eventide looks nice - like the Black Hole too.

I really like this pick. I had two but one broke during heavy playing. The reason I only bought two were because they were charging 5 EUR for them. They say it's made from some special material but mainly I think it's the triangular shape and sharp corner. I could not find one this sharp at a large music instrument store. The only place I could find to buy them is in Japan:

Interesting. Presumably you get the pick sound though as well as the sustain, which is a different effect than E Bow. Looks a bit cumbersome compared to just taking an E Bow on stage though, although it would interesting from an audience POV. Will look into the Junior, the full model is a bit expensive. Any idea what the differences between the two models are? Always up for interesting guitar stuff like this.

For me damping is a prob even for normal playing (without gadgets) - Such that for recording chords say on top 3 strings only, I will often tape the bottom three strings down with electrical tape to stop them vibrating.

Don't know if this would be normal practice or just a prob with my chops :)

It behaves more like the traditional feedback from back in the day - without the volume. You can control which harmonics feedback, and as well I've come up with some wild effects by feeding back up at the bridge using the piezo pickups as a second feedback loop.

The main distinction with the ebow et. al. is that it's more all-or-nothing rather than using a bit of randomness.

That sounds nice. I like the way that thing works. What kind of guitar is that?

The Sustainiac "Model C" is said to sound like a natural feedback. It clips on to the neck so can be easily used on any guitar but it doesn't look like as much fun to use or as cool as Greg's device.

The guitar is a Brian Moore DC1 custom.
The piezo's in the bridge drive the Eventide's while the mags go direct to the amp.
I often layer Prophet 5, Atze, or ModIV underneath. :)

But I have an entirely custom 8-string that I designed with a builder up in Seattle that is due any day now. :wink:

edit: the Sustainiacs I've tried were a little too 'all-or-nothing', and didn't offer enough subtlety (and at the time required swapping it into my guitar).
But I like what Steve Vai does with the Sustainiac, so it's a matter of feel for me.

I still think you guys oughtta try a Lexicon PCM70 since it's Analog I/O's and works exceptionally well for mic'd gear too.
I used an Eclipse 1U for pitch mod and found it was pretty cool for percussive attack material as the tails were decent, but you guys are playing sustained types of instruments and the best reverb effect for that is a unit that will melt the source material into the effect, or wrap around the sound.
These Eventides have a nice sound but they are strictly tail makers.
I can only suggest picking up a PCM70 on ebay where the user gets 21 days to make a decision, and then you can see what I mean, I doubt you'll return the unit. But in case you prefer the background wash of the Eventide, you simply return the PCM70 and claim it smelled like cigarettes or had a scratch on it you didn't like.
Hope I'm not offending anyone here, but I find any reverbs made since 1995 sound like IR's and don't wrap around the audio. Native is a perfect example of this too. And yes DSP reverbs also suffer from this, but at least with the STW Plate, Inverse and Ambience we can use stereo Aux's to help a little and the editing options are truly magnificient.
But I am stuck in my ways when it comes to Reverb. I would buy a Bricasti, but 3500 USD is just a little too steep for me, but that's what they use on the big jobs.
A PCM70 would flow in between the strings of that Guitar and you'd find you don't need 20 second decay times or massive room sizes. A splash goes a long way.

I still love the sound of the Guitar and the pedal, I am just a picky old fart..
