wifi routers make all the difference

Post by kensuguro »

I didn't realize 'till today, that a wifi router can make your connection slow. My internet connection was riddled with problems, and I kept thinking it was my ISP.. I swapped out my router for the best one I could find (linksys e3000), and BAM, the internet is literally 10X faster. My upload speed is actually 50X faster. My old one was a "whatever" Belkin router I picked up at officemax.

Anyway, to anyone who didn't know... do yourself a favor and get a good router. It's like night and day.

Amen Brotha' Man Ken.......
I bought a 30 dollar router since I rent a room upstairs, and then my son has his own room up there too with WiFi XBox Kinect, a DAW and an internet PC.
Anyways, my renter whines like a beotch if the room is too hot, too cold, too nosiy, smells cooked food, and especially internet access and cable.
The cheap unit was a PITA so I returned it and then noticed on the box that it had ratings for distance and bandwidth.
I then got a 60 Dollar router and just like you said everything improved and no more whining.
I also disabled automatic updates......... :D

Yup, different classes: 802.11 b, g and n. I had a mix of g and n wireless equipment, now it's all n, and works much faster...

Dual band radios help when you have a mixture of N & G. Also I enjoy using DDWRT or Tomato on buffalo based routers, I usually get better performance (with a stable build of the firmware) than the stock firmware for a given device and FAR more control & options. I run oidentd and a few small scripts on my router (under DDWRT) and get about 10% more speed out of the router to boot.

I had a lot of problems with Second Life until I replaced my modem which was 9 years old.

Older Linksys 802.11g wireless router:

WAY faster (obviously) straight connect to modem.

I sometimes work remotely from home, so I need the speed.
