Whose using SoundCloud?

Post by dante »

For a ScopeRise article I'm writing, include your soundcloud URL, what you mainly use soundcloud for (and/or how Scope is involved) and any other comments about soundcloud.

I created a soundcloud account so that I could investigate using the embedded player on my site.
It's very easy to use and you can see a couple of examples here:
http://www.modularsynth.co.uk/samples.shtml

However, you can only use the mini player if you sign up for a Lite Account (29 EU a year), so it looks a bit clunky.

I'd be really interested in anyone's reccomendations for embedding mp3 players into websites - there are lots of options, and I'd be interested to hear anyone's experiences.

BooMP3 looks quite good, as does podbean.

Any reccomendations?

BoomP3 has a dependancy on dropbox. Podbean looks slick, but I couldnt see the rates anywhere.

The soundcloud links on modularsynth site look great plus visitors to the site can add comments, so still looks like the winner to me.

you know, i can see the benefit of unlimited storage that's someone else's problem, but who is really being left in charge of humanity's records? i'm still in favor of spreading it out. it's not bad if some things never become connected. a firewall is still a friend, sometimes.

these things are only important to human beings. a non-human entity really doesn't care about human needs, how could it possibly understand? even if human beings are used to in-corpos the creature, it will still work for it's own purposes. this is just how things work, not good or bad. it may have something to do with why it's so trendy-cool to hate human beings these days and why monsters are the popular role models of the day.

just a thought or two on the matter...apologies for getting off topic.

Have been experimenting with Yahoo Media Player.

What's really cool about it is that you don't need to add anything to your site and you don't need to host your tracks anywhere else.

You just add a single line to your web page and it automatically adds a link to all the MP3s on the page.

Here's a new version of the sample page which has had the one extra line added:
http://www.modularsynth.co.uk/samples_yahooplayer.shtml

There seems to ba a bug whereby long tracks are cut short after 4-5 seconds, so I'm looking into that, but otherwise it seems like a really good lightweight solution. The player is quite customisable - I'm just using the default settings at the moment while I investigate the above mentioned bug.

Yahoo player is the best alternative Ive seen so far, I like the smallish buttons. That would be great for my Modular IV reference, if I had an audio sample for each module, I could add those small buttons without redesigning whole page.

Storage is an issue for ScopeRise, if I hosted all these MP3's on the ScopeRise site, I would have to upgrade and pay ISP more anyway. SoundCloud storage was still cheaper especially if upping the quality to wav or higher bitrates as this doesnt increase the cost on SoundCloud.

But for a few small MP3's not likely to grow, yahooplayer looks to be the go.

Sorted the problem I was having with yahooplayer. In fact all embedded MP3 players gave the same problem - some problem with the original mp3 encoding (possibly using Variable Bit Rate encoding).

All files are now re-encoded, and I've switched my samples page over to using the yahooplayer.

Very easy to use - a single line of html will add the player to any linked audio files on a page - much easier than having to add a seperate player for each mp3 file which the other players I've looked at require.

Soundcloud definitely overkill for my purposes, although I like the interface. Too much hassle to upload each of my tracks to a seperate soundcloud file and then have to link back to it - but great for artists promoting their work, etc.

yahooplayer is great, thanks for the tip! I used to use Wimpy player, but it's better for large playlists, not single files.

I have recently started using soundcloud for some of my music, feel free to check it out (please do :) ): http://soundcloud.com/aqob
