Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
So-called 'Freespace' interactive music apps have been around for almost 15 years - just that the hardware horsepower hasn't been ready until now.
Most of the trending right now is for ipad development though...

Yeah, we were doing it with two Macs, and a PC using infrared and proprietary MIDI/DMX control stuff starting back in '94.
The V8 of 'the product' is still being demo'd to developers and 'Vegas types' using 3D graphics and full-dome projections.
It's currently running on one laptop, so we're getting there.

The iPad is an iFad. Android will bury it. Good riddance! Kinect was offered to Apple first but their demands were too ridiculous.
Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
well, I just grabbed a page with 'new android apps', do your own flash cards stuff and titty-shifting puzzles, what a bore...
there's already quite some midi on the iPad, even emulating the Mackie Control, but there's a catch indeed:
you can trigger such bursts of events that it's not always reliable - the thing is almost too responsive
To be honest, I'm rather convinced that it was XP not keeping up with the stream and crashing.
probably emphasized by the fact that it's a wireless connection...
My personal benchmark is the Korg iElectribe:
I have never seen such a smart and robust user interface.
Imho it even superceeds the knob version because you really CAN handle 4 controls simultaneously.
Btw on YouTube almost everyone demoes it the wrong way, even the Korg guys...
There's no need to fiddle around those tiny knobs: just put your finger on a control, keep it pressed and drag over the surface.
Not only does this provide a convenient radius for precise movements, but it also frees the area for a nearby control you might like to tweak, too. While both index fingers do the rotary action, it's possible to drag them towards other controls to 'sidestep' with you ring fingers for a quick increase in volume or switching of an effect etc.
But the real stunning thing is that during a sequence with dial movements programmed, you CAN twist them against their direction without a glitch, thus over-ruling the program... and once you release the control it immediately snaps back into it's predefined path.
I've used the iPad on train and it was way more effective than a laptop doing some charts and diagrams on the way.
Not to mention the entertainment stuff...
Android will have a hard time to ever get there (imho).
cheers, Tom

Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
Ableton's support for TouchOSC and OSCulator has come a long way (though the more advanced stuff is still going to require a software OSC host or midi loopback app, automap pro, bome's midi translator or etc (whether on OSX or Win) or at least Max4Live. I'm not convinced that using a capacitive interface is really useful for stage/performance work though, I've had enough issues with just a trackpad during a sweaty gig. TONS of studio ideas spring to mind though...
For instance this is perhaps more of interest to me personally as I still use Logic, but Logic now has native TouchOSC support: TouchOSC + Logic 9.1.2 = wow

Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
The point here is that Kinect is pretty cool technology - totally mapped response of graphical data to fairly advance visual sensor technology and lots of interpolation - all with fairly low latency.
And now people are trying to 'hack' or emulate the algorithms and mappings in a similar fashion.
Fact is that MS has copied existing technology that's been around for several years
I've demo'd (under non-disclosure) some even more advanced tech. that uses video - in a 3D environment rather than forward-looking at a screen. It's freakin' amazing and it's music-based.
It's far better than the early days of so-called 'virtual reality' setups where you could pop a balloon on a screen in front of you using a wand. The latency was horrible, and it took about 3 computers (at the time).
The point is also that this has nothing to do with TOUCHING ANYTHING. It's total control of media perameters in FREE (open) SPACE.

Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
So I was reading about the guy who hacked the Xbox Kinect and it turns out he wants to incorporate the drivers into his software CL Studio Live which is a video effects program which seems to be inspired by the virtual modular synthesizer Reason. This appears perfect for me and I will download the demo tomorrow, not just for the Kinect but I like the whole concept of this from what I can tell. I knew there was a reason why I upgraded Premiere Pro 2 to Premiere CS5 (which is in transit now to my house.)
Microsoft is steaming mad about this and claims it is taking legal actions even though the Copyright Office recently deemed that this type of hacking is totally legal.

Yeah rrrrrright, iPad is a 'fad' that 5 other manufacturers including Samsung and Dell are now building.braincell wrote:The iPad is an iFad. Android will bury it. Good riddance! Kinect was offered to Apple first but their demands were too ridiculous.

Bloody hell I'm gonna get that Korg thingy - for $16 what a bargain.
Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?

got it

to be fair, it can't really keep up it's 'analogish' approach in high resonance settings, but at least the artifacts are kind of unique and not totally unpleasant.
cheers, Tom
it's an expensive app, dragging me away from work for almost 2 hours...

Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
Then perhaps run it through this: http://www.korg.com/monotron ?astroman wrote:to be fair, it can't really keep up it's 'analogish' approach in high resonance settings, but at least the artifacts are kind of unique and not totally unpleasant.
Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
well, the synth has a fairly extreme control range - I'd even expect a Scope implementation (let alone VST) to get into sweat on the task.
Just discovered the sequencer, a VERY smart keyboard implementation and a double Kaos Pad.
The left one for controller values, the right with scales from chromatic, over eastern to whatever comes to mind.
All quickly accessible with an intuitive interface. It's another landmark, a step beyond the iElectribe.
If the damn iPad only had a digital multi-channel IO ...
Anyway, as mentioned earlier... it's not totally unthinkable to have something like that connected to Scope sound sources beyond the midi way.
cheers, Tom

Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
Could do that too, assuming one had Scope on hand nearby

Re: Kinect Hacked Already Could Music Apps Be Not Far Away?
I usually ran the iElectribe through Celmo's Guitar amp sim
... and have the iMS20 connected through an Intellifex, but it would be nice to have THAT extended filter range.
Possibly they'll update their algorithms - the app shot up to #1 in 2 days with 40 positive votes in Germany, which is quite something...

Looks like a fat version of the DS-20 for nintendo ds - can you sync many machines wirelessly?

Apple stock falls as iPad sales expected to miss estimates.
