Online Phone Communications

Post by dawman »

What's the hot app for phone service through the PC?
I have heard of a 25 USD yearly service but there are so many I was hoping someone here had some experience...

Thanks.

Skype isn't awful, it's considerably cheaper than any cel/landline for international calls and isn't awful for domestic calls.

Gizmo5 is nice and now allows the integration with your Google Voice account, so when you do computer calls they appear as coming from your home number or at least a consistent phone number for others to add (your Voice number.) Usually cheaper than Skype but iirc PC only...

Google Voice isn't awful though a bit browser centric, & now even Gmail have voice integration. Google is also a tad confusing in its offerings between Voice, Gmail and Gmail plugins for video chat.

What you're looking for is a VOIP alternative (like skype/google voice etc) so here's a few other popular ones, none of which I've tried :P

Skype is great. Unlimited National landline calls $6 per month in Aus. Use it at home on computer or on iPhone over WiFi.

I use Skype all the time for engineering meetings with guys in London, New York, San Jose, and even across the county.

Latest version also has screen share.

It's free.

I also use it to talk with my family around the country and overseas.

Jim, you can always look me up for a Scope share session. I got lots o' learnin' to do.

I use skype the most myself as well, though using gmail/google voice with your voice account's phone # for SMS is really handy as well. I also currently use my google voice number on my signature in several emails & some business related correspondance where I don't want my home address/land line or mobile accounts to be exposed. I'm less worried about google and the US NSA/DOJ colluding to come slip off with my gear than I am people who might know me locally as a musician
