DSP usage

Post by Inferman »

Hello Scope Community.

I have a problem with my scope system.
I have Scope Project (v5) and Scope Booster (there is "Scope+Pulsar2, 21 DSP" in DSP load window).
Theese cards connected with two STDM.

I open mixer 2448 in 96kHz mode, create "ASIO1-32 Source 64" with 48 channels and when I link ASIO channels with mixer it writes "sorry, limit of DSPs is reached" with only 8 of yellow blocks in DSP load meter.

Why so? Is it because of incorrect to connect 6 and 14 DSPs Scope cards or 2 STDM cables is not enough or any other reason?
If I use, for example, STM 1632 in 44.1 kHz mode, I can load all "DSP load" meter with Chorus-Delay or any plugin - it works fine.

Could You advise me something?
Thanx a lot :)

PS: Yeah, it stops even if I add every link ASIO-mixer one by one - so I can control the dsp load, it stops when just 8 blocks are full.

hey !

i don't use other than 44.1 but anyway, you can try to play arround cset.ini settings , where you can add those lines for
boards load order,
[board0]
boardid=1...
you can check in your manual or maybe in pdf document (not sure where).

when i play arround those settings, i can load almost or full DSP meter, without that annoying error message,
but i must write down proper cards orded in cset.ini,

just a thought to play arround :)

Have a look at your dsp-meter and check whether scope or pulsar is 1st in dsp usage.
If pulsar is 1st it may be worth a try and set scope as first card by changing boardid in cset.ini.
It looks like pulsar is first and the mixer must be spread across the cards which may cause trouble...
If you search the forum for boardid you will find all details you need... Hope it helps!
;-)

Ahh, found it (from astroman)
so switch 2 cards in cset.ini add:
[board0]
boardid=1
[board1]
boardid=0

yea, i have tried with 48kHz with no problems, but i prefer 44kHz and 24bit recording in Cubase,
always good results :)

many devices can NOT span multiple dsps, especially if those dsps are spread across multiple cards, due to real-time timing issues. it is possible to run out of real estate long before all dsps are filled. usually you can do a "global optimisation", which is a reshuffling of the load to make things fit better. ALL dsp systems work this way, in fact, the legendary Pro Tools HD is even LESS forgiving about load order/configuration. there is no reload option with PT.

garyb, thanx for explanation.
But what the point to connect several cards if it leads to such issues?

And one more thing - can I make global optimisation at any moment? I mean only when all of my dsp are full it appears.

that's right only when full.

things load as they can. physical limitations are the work of God, for the most part, so there's often nothing to be done about them. chainin cards together DOES give you more power, plenty in fact, for real world use, but it works as it does, admittedly less than perfectly, but as i said, more efficiently than PTHD...

the order that devices get loaded can often make a big difference in how well they load. when possible, it's always best to have the biggest card as the first card, to minimize devices spanning two cards. most of the time, the global optimization works to make a project fit, although since a big project can be quite a jigsaw puzzle, it make take a couple of attempts to make everything work. the alternative is to do what Pro Tools does, just refuse to load partially used dsps any further and make you buy more....
