Max MSP for Ableton Live

Post by David »

According to the promotional video on the Ableton site, it seems it is now possible to get behind the structure of the pre made devices in Ableton and also to, build your own and share devices with the online community.

There have already been discussions in this forum for using Max/MSP for mapping the functionality of external controllers to Scope. I'm looking to alter the functionality of the Novation Launchpad and Akai APC40 to better suit Scope, which it seems is now possible under the Max for Live addition to Ableton. I hope this benefits the Scope environment as I intend!

Some of the Ableton instruments were created by AAS (Analog etc) but this will certainly allow you to "get behind" new creations added to Live from the Max team and anything the userbase creates. Also it's worth noting that Max for Live supports JITTER as well...

i guess it's cool for building small patches to tweak MIDI streams, like CC remapping and changing curvature and stuff.. but for synths and effects, it's tough to justify the dev time required to get even the most basic implementations of common things. (so-so comp, simple polysynth, etc) But that's a max-msp issue. It's cool that Live has integration.

To be honest, I wish the integration was a bit deeper allowing control over Live itself and just just plugins and racks. I've really wanted to be able to control multiple different parameters with a single midi control for a LONG time (like ganging faders to a single midi controller, or mutes, or triggering clips etc.) There are ways to get around this (bussing, putting clips to be triggered together on the same horizontal 'scene' etc) but when you get into having to use dummy clips for certain types of automation and other fun stuff to work around some of the interface/midi related limitations things get to be a bit..fiddly...for live work. Starts to feel like a 3-necked guitar at times...

someone should just make a vsti version of csound.. visualized with patch cables and stuff. ah, if only it was that easy. It's sad that the world's most powerful synth is just sitting there, documented, optimized, and free.. except it's such a pain to use. Max/msp is a good compromise because it's fairly easy to deal with I guess.
