You have nothing to be embarassed about, your song is very nice...
It sounds kinda like björk (which I really love) with a more organic background. I like it alot.
For me Music is all about feelings, sound and rythm comes second. First you feel, then you play. And, really, you cant talk about bad quality, becourse if it means something to you then its good, no matter how it sounds, or what others think. It's all subjective.
Some of the music I get touched by the most is some old billie holiday records I have...
They are very bad quality soundwise, you know crackles, noise, miked with one mic. Billie even sings out of tune half the time becourse shes so high. But here the quality of the recording doesn't matter at all. I could even play it on the tinyest little shit portable player, billies soul will always come flying out the little shitty speaker, right into my heart. Too, it doesn't matter if she sings a little out of tune some times, becourse for me, it just pronounces the feeling she expresses.
Infact I feel that the way things are recorded today, mostly in pop and r&b music, things get really "sterile", and lacks a fundamental feeling, or emotion.
Keep up your exellent work, and let us hear some more...
DO NOT be embarrassed one inch. As Thalamus so rightly says, the most important thing in music is the emotion - and this really does DOES DOES have a beautiful atmosphere.
And as for being badly recorded - maybe its my speakers, but it sounds absolutely fine.
There will always be mountains to climb (I hope) but looking down is the only way of knowing how high one's got.
Just listen to your radio - this beats 99% of the stuff out there.
Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. And yes, emotional content, the message of a song are the most important aspects to me. I guess I'd change this attitude if I was to earn my livelihood from music
I love the Rhodes playing and I constantly appreciate new tricks and clever composition throughout.
And the vocals!!!!
The voice drifts in and out of my consciosness like the devil's temptress always luring.
Strangely enough even though I liked so much about the song, I didn't actually like the song - which is odd.
I mean the composition was impressive almost throughout, the vocals were sex on a stick - better than Sade and it even had clever closing gimmicks with the scratchy record finish - what's not to like?
But I just felt like all this amazing work could have been directed to a better song.
No, actually scratch that - because it's not actually important whether I like the actual song or not because that's so much a taste thing, but bloody nice work.
I'm feeling a little inferior right now. I better get something good up here soon or I'm just going to shrivel into nothingness.
Caleb, appreciate your words. I'm happy to see people saying this work is of some value. I'm in a country which is far from active musical life, kinda like overgrown backwater . When we start our moaning about the low quality of the music here we attribute this to the fact that this place missed all the rock'n'roll of the past century, hopefully we can catch the train of the electronic age. The female vocals are done by a classically trained singer. The funny part was that I had to teach her how to pronounce every word so that it would sound like a comprehensible English. It was an interesting session with me in the control room and her in the studio. At the end I was quite proud of my student especially when compared to what I heard at first... She's willing to continue her studies into the jazz area, and I'm hoping to do more stuff with her later.
I know this is easily said, but why must she sing english? If you want to help developing a living and self-confident musical scene in Lithuania, do a first step and produce contemporary, creative music (what your song definately is) in your native language. That would be cool!
I know it is tempting to look at the international market. Even here in Germany, where we have quite a big market, only few serious musicians are courageous enough to sing in german. But the scene is growing, and these guys can express thereselves much better and have an own identity. Discover the beauty of your own language! I´d really be interested in that, and I think I´m not the only one. You could perhaps add an english translation.
Believe in your own culture!
Good point calippo. And I do have some ideas of using my native language (in fact it's one of the oldest indo-european languages, closest to Sanskrit). But the problem is that all the lyrics I do are in English due to the fact that I actually grew up with that language, and often even think in it - my mother's a teacher of English, and I earn my livelihood as an interpreter .
