ADAT/Z-Link I/O Expansion electronic component escaping...

Post by JoPo »

Hi...

I don't know much in electronic... I'd like to know the name of the electronic component surrounded on the photo ? It came unsoldered long ago, I had resoldered it but this time, it lost a leg, I thus have to buy back one.

Thanks !

that's a capacitor. there's redundancy on the board, however. it'll probably work without it if it's just the one.

Ah yes ?

I'm not ready to try !

Is n't it written a number with a 'F' on a capacitor ? F for Farad ?

looks like a 47uF (microfarad) power capacitor.
Probably necessary if it was used for power filtering of the big chip right next to it.

why not check with S/C? they're the only ones who know for sure. this has come up before here and there IS redundancy.

siriusbliss is correct, by the way.

???????? The fact that we are discussing that really disturbs you ???????? If it is, why are you reading ??

Or my english is really bad and I don't understand nothing.

Gary just wants your best! :)
If you are not sure, just write a little email to SC (with the same pic) and you will know...
Gary knows the cards really well!

It was right ! I took the risk and put back and the ADAT/Z-Link I/O Expansion daughter card works normaly without the capacitor ! What an adventure !

PFFffff !

Great !

:) as i said, there IS redundancy. the board is well built. still, you're right. it would be best to replace the cap. perhaps S/C could provide one?

as that stuff is operated with a 66 (?) Mhz clockrate it's required that this supply buffering cap sits as close as possible to the chip's connectors. For that reason you see the same type of cap at the same position of each DSP.
The board will work perfectly without, unless a situation comes up where the 'reserve power' stored in the cap is needed.
In that case the processing will fail with unpredicatable result, ranging from not noticable at all to a full BSOD :D
It's easy to replace by a similiar part from some electronic trash. It's 47 microFarad indeed.

cheers, Tom

might still be best to check out Digikey and try to get a sample (for free), and solder it in place.
DSP's can run hotter without buffering when under stress - which could lead to other degredation of other components down the line over time.

garyb wrote::) as i said, there IS redundancy.

!!! Redundancy ... on the board building !!! It was a misunderstanding ! I understood that there is redundancy in the subject of this thread !!! :D

Anyway, I'll change it, I know an electronic handyman... Thank you all !
