Interesting Setup & A Setting Problem

Post by Glennk »

Greetings; Like every other gearhead in Toronto, i went to the Long&McQuade attic sale last weekend, and i lucked out on a bunch of stuff.

One of the things I was hoping to grab was another adat front-end for use with my S-C cards. Based on the (what proved to be incorrect) advice of a sales guy, I picked up a TC Konnekt24D. It's possible to send the total K24D mix into an S-C card via adat, but there is no 1-to-1 analog-to-adat channel mapping, which was what i wanted.

On a whim, i set up the K24D as my sound source in Cubase, and plugged a Pulsar II adat out into the K24D's adat in to see what would happen. I use the K24D as the master clock. This setup works like a charm.

Not sure if this is going to become my main Cubase setup, but using the K24D in this way gives me two input channels with pre-amps that apparently are quite good (haven't had a chance to try them yet). There's also a quite good headphone amp that'll take 2 headphones. I've only done a couple qwik & sloppy A/B tests for recording outboard synths using the K24D (firewire mode) vs my old MOTU 2408MkII (as an adat front-end for S-C), but early test results sound promising.

One thing i can't figure out is how to use this new setup at 96khz. With the K24D internal clock set at 96khz (with the same project setting in Cubase), i've tried the Pulsar II's normal ADAT module as well as the SMUX module, but neither seem to work. The S-C samplerate (set in slave mode) still reads 48 khz.

Any suggestions? Not sure if 96khz will give a noticeable improvement, but i'd like to try it out.

Regards
Glenn
