I have Jamstix 2 for producing incredibly realistic drum loops and now I need to find some effects to make the loops sound as if they were lifted from a vinyl recording. I've messed around with Izotope's Vinyl and Ableton Live's Vinyl effect. I'm wondering if anyone here can suggest some nice Scope effects that would fit the bill. I'm looking for more than just vinyl effects. I'm looking for vintage reverbs and other effects that were used on those types of records. Preferably free and preferably XTC compatible.

Vinyl drum loop effects
Re: Vinyl drum loop effects
I have Larry Seyers Acoustic Drums and disable the effects and use Scope FX.
SSB Modulator can do some weird stuff, but for Vontage old sounds like Beach Boys on Memphis's Sun Studio Celmos Spring reverbs w/ the Twang parameter is really cool.
I can't think of another reverb that's vintage, but MCCY's Sattek is damn nice on drums and it's free too. He also has a Spring too.

Re: Vinyl drum loop effects
seems to me I remember an old plugin somewhere called something similar to 'dirt', but I can't seem to find it (yet).
Usually you can do some EQ'ing tricks to get at least that older narrow EQ banding effect, but for crackles and dust I've usually used Vinyl or one of Samplitude's plugins with some EQ filters turned on.

Re: Vinyl drum loop effects
If you want vinyl noise imo you should just sample a decent length of it. I have quite a few 12's and 45's that were cut with a 'blank' track, b-side or you can even just record the runout (where teh groove will circle infinitely before the label is hit.) Also if you want to emulate the 'vintage' feel of something you can either try to mimic the frequency response and lack of dynamic processing from that specific era, look at mono or panning (lack of) conventions from that era etc. Some of the better known break loops had versions that were hard-panned that are sought after because other sounds panned opposite are very low in the loop but still contribute to the tone of each hit when the hit is enveloped.
Re: Vinyl drum loop effects
I did the same as valis, sampling dirty records for the noise and then layering and bouncing together with a loop i'd programmed, I often eqed the loop in shroomz' tube strip with a hp filter lowered then a boost on the highs which brought out a vinyly style eq, then equed the rest of the loop accordingly a bit of verb applied brought it together when it needed it, I generally had a room verb but with a short tail just to add depth.
just what I did but plenty of experimental ways to do it, I even once recorded a drummer then sent his edited session off to the dub cutters to have a 10inch acetate done then re-recorded it. I may do this again as I liked the results.

Thanks for all the great replies! I finally found my workflow for making what I call a "faux-sampled beat". Please check out the link below for some examples. This is so much fun!

Nice rig there mate.
And not quantizing is a great idea too.
What kind of metronome do you use, or is it a click?

Re: Vinyl drum loop effects
Thanks. I use the metronome that is built into Ableton Live. I developed a template that has all the tracks, routing, and effects setup so I can get right to the composing. The best part of this exercise is that it opened up a whole new world of music for me. I was listening to my parent's mellow contemporary albums during this time period so I missed out on the whole funk genre. Then in the 90s, when these records started to be sampled for hip hop beats, I had no idea about their origin. So this has been a huge learning experience for me.XITE-1/4LIVE wrote:Nice rig there mate.

Re: Vinyl drum loop effects
I really like that video you did chisel, I've only made beats sound vinylised (? is there such a word) but I love the idea of creating a whole piece of music to chop up like a funk sample. Excellent

Re: Vinyl drum loop effects
Thanks for the kind words. Since I made those beats, I discovered a free VST called Wow & Flutter which adds even more to the overall vintage effect. I also purchased Addictive Drums which has some amazing vintage presets and huge tweakability to get just the right sound. Check out the breakbeat audio demo at http://www.xlnaudio.com/?page=products&p_page=audio to see what I'm talking about. I'll be using both of these on my next beat.devastate wrote:I really like that video you did chisel, I've only made beats sound vinylised (? is there such a word) but I love the idea of creating a whole piece of music to chop up like a funk sample. Here's my second attempt:

BTW, I'd like to listen to your vintage-style beats if you have them posted.
