New software, preamp

Post by wayne »

I've recently ditched my ancient cubase vst V5 (hubird, you still using that? :) ) and gone with Sonar, which i'm liking a lot. Recommend it with scope.

Also i've been making scores with Finale, which is a cool program indeed. Takes the headaches out of transposing brass etc. etc.

My Soundcraft Compact 10 recently burnt out - if anyone has one of these mixers, don't leave it powered up too much! There is no off switch, and the lead is impossible to pull out, so i was fooled and that little desk is a goner :( Got powerboards with switches now

On the up side, i scored an RME Quad Mic pre - which sounds good and has 48v, lo cut & phase on each channel. Suits the A16, and with the little 4 channel headphone amp i picked up the other day i'm back in business :)

Been recording kit, bass, acoustic guitar tonight - those rme pres are definitely a step up for me. Juicy, and can be had for around $500. Ever get them through the shop, Gaz?

As i mentioned before, if you use your A16 as a multitasking patchbay like me, this is a bargain, a solid German unit and very useful for a desk-free daw :)

we had one pair(i believe) come through. i never really got a chance to a/b them with anything else, but knowing the quality of RME's other products, i'd expect them to be quite useful.

I've heard good things about RME but I'm keeping my Grace Design 101 pre. It will work with any future OS.

Pity that Grace m101 goes for $899 here in Australia. Must fill my knapsack with preamps next time i hit the States.

:)

the best pre for the money that i've seen is still the FMR RNP @ $500 for two channels with both hiz and loz inputs.

most of the best pres are in the $500-1500 per channel price range...

i'd take the RME over any of the less expensive pres just based on RME's quality in thier other products.
