Does scope need a wiki?
Does scope need a wiki?
What do you think about starting a wiki project for scope? Of course, there is a lot of knowledge inside planet Z, but I think it is not very comfortable to get it out. I think, a wiki could easily become a serious persistent knowledge base for scope. Not least for the scope SDK...
(In principle, this would be a task for sonic core...)

Re: Does scope need a wiki?

maybe you could start it and maintain it? no doubt such a thing would be nice...

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
We've talked about this from time to time.
I've no doubt that if a Wiki were to be created, it would be filled in no time with very useful stuff.
However, no-one seems to have the time/expertise/space to set one up and host it and maintain it.
S/C certainly have other things to do right now!

I can host (and help maintain) a Scope wiki...though I would want J.Cooper to speak up first and state whether he has any interest in doing it first.

I've never been a part of one...but valis...I'm willing to help anyway I can, if you have the need or desire...

Sure, but let's hear from J.C. first. If he's got an interest I think that hosting it here makes the most sense. As a companion for the Z there's a lot of info that could be integrated. If he hasn't got the time or ability to host it then I'm ready & willing.

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
Hey guys,
Great idea. I'd like to see it happen, but I'm hesitant to take on another project at the moment- not enough time. Go for it Valis!
We can link directly to it from planetz, so it won't matter if it's on another site...
Thanks

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
Valis, wiki pages are subject to quite a lot of vandalism, so if you set one up I'd advise that you make sure it's somehow locked & can't be edited by just anyone. I'm no expert on what the options are, as I've never set one up, but the last thing you need is to have to keep re-editing it because of trolling wise guys.
Btw, can it not just be created & hosted on wikipedia.com??

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
It depends on how fine-grained you wanted to be with things still being Scope-specific. If we did it in wikipedia.com a lot of things are common to the general audio world, and you'd wind up trying to get Scope footnotes and addendums inserted everywhere, I've no idea how that would fare actually. While I wouldn't say that's a bad idea I suspect it may not be as useful to scope-specific questions & usage, but of course would help the visibility of the platform overall so it's probably still worthwhile to make sure that some of Scope is represented there even if there is a separate wiki for us.
And yes I probably wouldn't leave a wiki open to public editing. Assign a few top-level people that can help me grant access to new users who want to be able to edit & keep an eye on the edits being done to make sure they're relevant and I think we'd be fine. The bigger concern for me would be choosing a wiki that will have longterm support and then keep an eye on keeping it secure so it doesn't expose my webserver machine's underlying OS to anything malicious. A single site is easy enough to backup & restore if defaced but I've got about somewhere between 30-40 sites on there right now and whole-machine restoration is a hassle.
Anyone have suggestions for a url? scopewiki.com is immediately obvious but not necessarily the most creative thing...

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
scopeinfo.com ?
scopeworld.com ?
BTW great idea to put scope in WIKI. Every other major audio-gear seems to be listed there.

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
when i thought about wiki, i had these pages in mind
http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/
from the midibox (www.uapps.de) project
you have to log in, or maybe we can use the same planetz account, and permit the page editing only to those with, let say, at least 20 posts - in order to avoid spamming

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
Probably won't ask J.C. to turn over PlanetZ user info, potential privacy issues abound there. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out a handful of interested folk from present company and 'authorize' their accounts, then go from there.
Midibox uses DokuWiki, no database required & it seems to have security through access control lists (ACL) & some level of anti-spam support.
I've got another forum I'm active on (dogsonacid.com aka DOA) where the production forum uses MediaWiki for their Dnbwiki so I can ask the guys who created it what they think of it. I'm actually a mod of the production forum there and have access to the admin threads that spawned that wiki, so I'll dig through them when I get a chance and see what other wiki's they considered and what data is there. (Incidentally anyone interested in breaks might want to look through the samples list on dnbwiki.com, all that stuff comes out of the DOA Grid forum posts which I happily have back door ftp access to so I can vouch for the breaks packs.)
scopedia overall is good but scopedia.net might fall a bit close to scopedia.com (though that may not really matter) scopewiki.com says the same thing though without as much of a flow as scopedia.
scopeworld.com sounds comprehensive, we'd have our work cut out for ourselves!
more suggestions?

Having it linked from the Z, and the "overall" knowledge level of users here, (I know that is a pretty broad stroke, but I'm still confident
) most will know the difference & adding enough Sonic Core content w/ Scope content..I know you get the idea now...
wonderful idea...on using the other wikis btw...imho it would make the undertaking, not quite as laborious....peace valis...

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
Not much input in the last day or so (been busy myself), are we choosing something based on voting or should I just decide? (And should I ask if the latter?
) If left up to me I'm leaning towards using a .org url, the .org TLD was initially for nonprofit/noncommercial entities after all. Url isn't critical to the functioning of course (people make a wiki 'go'), but it might be good to know if we're using the Farsi word for something awful before a few bucks are spent (for example).

Re: Does scope need a wiki?
In the true sense of a non-profit, (we know it for sure will be) I tend to agree. scopedia.org gets my vote
Just an opinion...I'll leave the final say the rest of the gang...VOTE AWAY PEOPLE!!!
Thanking you in advance...
