Scope card in a UAD Xpander chassis ???

Post by Hypersonix »

Hello all,

Maybe a stupid noob question but would this be possible?
Could I then load Scope 4 software onto my Vista 32 laptop and plug in this ?? :)

I had a scope card set up in a 1-unit magma chassis running on XP. I think it's unlikely that it would work with Vista, but don't have experience there.

I don't know how the Magma compares with the UAD version. It was functional, but had several limitations. I was able to load synths and play them with no problems. STS samplers, reverbs, and delays were very unstable (they need lots of PCI bandwidth). I didn't try recording, but I would think that would be difficult too unless you had 2 hard drives in your laptop. And the PCI bandwidth in general was much reduced compared to the same card placed directly into a system.

I ended up sticking with a dedicated computer, for ease of set up, full functionality, and stability.

Thanks for the reply Cory. I get the feeling this is probably not very plausable or Creamware would have done it themselves. I better start saving for Xcite huh !

Yeah, XITE is really the way to go, especially when they get the laptop connections put together. They were running from a laptop at NAMM, but the retail option isn't available yet.

I can't tell if you can put a scope card in an xpander chassis at all (meaning: there _could_ be a generic uad card plugged into a slot inside, or a custom board could be hardwired to the pcie bus as well), but somehow I would expect no.
EDIT: in the manual for the Xpander they say:

The UAD-Xpander contains a UAD-1e card that looks similar to the UAD-1e model for desktop computers. However, the cards are not the same! Do not attempt
to install a UAD-Xpander card into a computer slot, or put a UAD-1e into the Xpander chassis. Doing so will damage the cards and/or the computer logic board.

so the xpander is basically an express card to pcie adapter, and you would not be able to plug a scope card into it, since it is pci not pcie. nevertheless you cannot plug any other card into it without risking the card or other peripherals or even the mainboard.

with a magma (provided you connect it with cardbus) you will most probably experience performance loss, as reported here. if xou consider using an Xpander you have an express card slot (in favor of cardbus) any, haven't you? I don't know anybody running a scope card in a magma that hooks to a pcie x1 or xpress card (where I would expect somewhat higher pci performance), but I'd like to hear about it. volunteers, any? ;)

with scope 4.0 you will, btw, not be able to run your scope card with vista. you need to purchase the upgrade to 4.5 which includes 5.0 (being the first release compatible with vista).

Thank you for your views on this Markus :) .
I realise that my idea was a bit of a dream. But , if like you said someone found a way to get this running via pcie and working as if it were in a pcie slot , happy days ! I think it would gain a whole new following for Scope and Sonic Core. ( many more Scope 5 software sold ) There are enough Scope boards floating around that would get a new lease of life.
I would love a Xite but until Sonic Core MAYBE make a smaller sister ( using pcie slot for laptop ) it is out of my reach

We can all dream :D
