Extremely High Volume

hey all ,

i got a creamware powersampler card and Samson A6 Resolve monitors ,
till a week ago i used a Audiophile usb audio card and set the volume on the monitors to
a 50% , i connected the creamware card (i got it since 2001) , and i had to turn the volume
on the monitors to the minimum not to destroy the monitors , btw its connected to the monitors
on RCA jacks (unbalanced).

what could be the reason to this high volume?

The power of your speakers?

Seriously, the Creamware card just outputs line level, and the amp in each speaker is 100W. It's normal they have to be turned down quite a bit for "room level" music... Maybe you have a mixer that could additionally lower the output of the card before the speakers?

they are not so powerful , its so wierd,

it's hard to say what the adjustment on the back of the speakers is. 0db may be in the "off" position, it might be in the middle or at the end. anyway, the position of the knob has nothing to do with maximum volume directly. maximum volume is wherever it is, half way, all the way up or all the way down. the reason there's a control is to compensate for different sources. just do your best to adjust both speakers the same.

what is in your routing window? is there a mixer that has gain added? where is output of the card connected to inside the card?

For monitoring you could insert the control room module before the output destination module you're using & set the output level attenuator on the control room module to -40dB. In Scope the dynamic range is 186dB, so cutting off 40dB for monitoring is absolutely fine. Even if you're monitoring a recording via 24bit ASIO back through Scope you can afford to cut off 40dB for monitoring. Just a thought.

What does the luna card use for outputs (I can't recall atm)?

its connected to the card main out and in the routing window is a mixer with no gain

You should put a "volume knob" between the out of your card and the in of the monitors. the "master" fader of your mixer is NOT a volume knob

since we can't see or hear what's going on in your studio, we can only guess. my guess is everything is as it should be...

Does the LunaII/Powersampler have 1/4" (phone-jack) plugs? I'm trying to remember if it's outputting at -10 dBv or +4 dBu...

-10db but its not RCA , its just Unbalanced

Ok then yes assuming both the m-audio and the PowerSampler are properly referencing -10 dBv (0 dBu/1 dBm = .775volts w/ 1khz tone @ 600ohm impedence) then I shall bow out at this point

isn't there a device for sfp that i can put on the way to the monitor out (the powersampler analog out) that acts as a volume knob?
