I got a saxophone. It is a beast to play. There are buttons and levers all over the place. Some fingerings are out of tune in certain octaves and this varies between different brands. I don't know how anyone is able to master this instrument.
Update: I just got thin reeds and it's a lot easier to blow into now. Pros like them thicker because you getter a better sound but you can't play as quietly with the thicker ones.

I have the Yamaha wind controller and it is a lot easier than a real saxophone but actually that is why I wanted to get a saxophone because of all the variation in sound you can get with an acoustic instrument. The physical modeling does alter the sound but not so much. You can't get the ugly sounds on the electronic ones. I have developed an overwhelming philosophy that ugliness is a part of true beauty. Without it, you have something fake. I do love electronic music but I am grasping for something more human than what I have done. I have developed a taste for jazz (not smooth jazz *puke). I promise I will never play Misty, nor am I going to copy the standard sax cliches.

Do you have a link to JD Parran where I can listen?
I would rather have an oboe but they cost more. The saxophone was invented so that marching bands could have a loud reed instrument. To me wood is the ideal material for an instrument not brass yet Jon Hassell gets a very mellow sound from his trumpet.
Once I get the chromatic scale down, I'll feel more comfortable.

I tell you what, I found what I am going to buy as I was unaware it was still available and you can demo a snippet.
Yeah I know it sucks having to pay for incredible music, but Jules kicked the bucket in '95 and JD isn't really hip to posing on YouTube, etc.
Some recordings of him when he worked w/ Paul Butterfield and the NBC Orchestra can be found, but the stuff you want to hear isn't easy to find.
I think you'll probably break down and buy it after you hear some of their ideas.
Give me a couple weeks.

If you read up on his auto Biography I get an honorable mention.
He was my mentor from 75-77 in St.Louis.
They'll mention BB's Jazz Blues & Soups alot from the old jazz days before he got famous on us and moved to NYC.
The pic below is the same old place.
I photographed it last summer and it sure looks the same.
All of the old Buildings use to have painted ads on the side.
I was the only white guy everywhere we played, and only had a couple of run ins w/ pimps, etc. It was a learning experience I shall never forget.
If you can get a recording of Ravi Coltrane and Idina Menzel. They were incredible and I don't much care for singer/actress/models, but this girl is extremely gorgeous and incredibly talented. Ravi would play around her vocals, and to me half of the beauty of music is ideas from several people on stage who actually listen to each other and use their ears.
Sadly this is rare, but thankfully Vegas still hosts such shows.
