External Synth Routing?

Post by Paul T »

Hi there, i have just Bought a Roland Jp 8000, and cant seem figure out how to set it all up so that i can use it through cubase. If possible would someone be able to tell me the best way of routing and setting everything up please, It would be very much appreciated and would stop me from going bald, thankyou,

Which Scope card do you have?

Plug the JP-8000's L+R output tp Scope's L+R input (this may be via an external mixer or direct). In your Scope window have one of the Scope mixers. Connect the output of the mixer to Analog Dest module and connect this to your monitors (or external mixer if you have one) - this will allow you to monitor things.

Open an ASIO2 Dest module (choose one correct for your bit depth). Connect Analog Source to this. This ASIO module will now feed Cubase. To monitor Cubase tracks at the same time open an ASIO2 Source module and feed the output of that into the Scope mixer. This way you can hear Cubase plus anything you lay down live.

To simplify:

Analog Source>ASIO2 Dest

ASIO2 Source>STM Mixer>Analog Dest

all of the above, plus you might want to mute the track you're recording to in cubase to avoid confusion.

I'm not sure the JP-8000 is worth going bald over to begin with! (kidding)

I would check & see if it has 'active sensing' as many other Roland synths do, and see if there's a way to disable it in the unit's settings. If it does have it and no way to disable it, you might very well want to invest in a simple inexpensive midi line filter that can filter out system messages like active sensing... (filtering in Scope itself is not 100% effective at preventing the buffer overflows it causes)

Well after hours of trying, i still can not get any sound out of my synth by playing a midi file via cubase. I am getting some sort of signal coming threw but no sound. Rrrr, god scope can be confusing when you dont no what the hell you are doing!lol :-?

Try this project:

Now you should have:
JP-8000>Pulsar Analogue Inputs
In the project window this appears as Pulsar Analog Source. This is being fed to Cubase via ASIO. Now use the Busses in Cubase to feed this signal, say, to Buss 2. If you have something in Cubase you want to play along with route that to Buss 3 etc.

Alternatively try this project:

Here the JP-8000 is going both to Cubase (via ASIO) and to Channel 6 (L+R) of the mixer. This way you can hear what you are playing as you record. This may be a better option depending upon your monitoring set-up.

you still need a sequencer midi source to a pulsar midi dest to carry the midi to the synth.

on the cubase track, you'll need to choose scope midi in/out1 as the output for the track, and of course the track and the synth need to be set to the same midi channel...

:)

if that's so....nevermind....

the midi channels still need to be the same, cubase and the synth.
