New Controller Specs.

Post by dawman »

The new MIDI CC#88 is still ahead of it's time.
There wasn't a software app at the demo that could use it's potential, but even in it's current state w/o support it allows extra layers to be heard using the VAX77.
The VAX77 was designed to fit in an Airlines baggage compartment overhead w/ a case.
It is a good design and does that certain trick well.
I tried the several controllers w/ their various weighted actions and I must admit they have some great ideas, but if someone is looking for the perfect Piano action it isn't there yet.
It feels like a real Piano on it's bounce back, but the initial pushing of the keys has no resisitance, IMO. But the second half was so realistic I found myself smiling. They actually have nailed that really well.
I wanted to test the Polyphonic Aftertouch but all they had was a Muse Receptor w/ Ivory Piano loaded.
These guys are definately onto something I would love to buy but I have no need for an Airplane keyboard at this time.
I would love to see 88 notes, more resistance on the intial attack, and definately do not want my controller to fold in half, even though they did a fine job.
The way this unit stores and recalls set ups and presets is excellent.
You can assign the foot pedals to use as keyswitches, or any other form of CC manipulations and store them as presets. Much easier than the huge collection of pedals I currently have to use.
This company has the ability to make the perfect controller IMO, so I will be watching them. But as of now I can only appluad them for what they have accomplished.
This would be a great PAT keyboard and is the only one that I am aware of, so if you have some synths that can take advantage of PAT it's the only choice I have seen.

I was able to trigger 9-10 layers immediately !! Other controllers can do 6...maybe.
But this is where the back bounce resistance really shined. It is up against your fingers the whole time and if they would just have the same technology applied to the initail attack portion. Velocity curves can be made but I didn't get the time to delve deeper. But these guys definately could bring us the best action and performance features if the market was available.

I like that but i do not think they should have put the mod wheel there. especially for a portable device which is going to get stood on its end.

Does seem a bit short-sighted, but maybe they've added xtra padding to each end of the soft flight case...

whoa.. you can see the pcb.. that's freaky. I still don't get why they value the folding thing so much. I mean, first there's the market that wants "a freakin' amazing piano controller". And then a subset of that wants "and make that very portable please". I'd think to please the bigger group first, and then shoot for specific markets within that group later.. probably a case of "I want one, so everyone must want one" type of a visionary / entrepreneur behind the product.

I really, really wished they'd gotten the action right. I think a "portable" one, and a "ultimate action" one can never be the same thing.. Actually, it's strange they're even going for the portable market, since it's very much saturated (with products that have bad action).

Have to agree with you Ken. It's definitely an oddball concept. Maybe the designer got the visionary inspiration whilst doing copious amounts of LCD or wacky cactus. :D

Actually they had a thinktank approach from tons of college students and live performers.
6th Street in Austin, Texas is full of clubs. Dance Electro, Country, Rock, Jazz and Big Band.
It's a really fun place to play or visit. Most famous performers go down to North Texas State and grab those guys right out of college and hit the road.
This is a result of listening to everyone and trying to please too much IMHO.
What killed me the most was trying to read the 1" x 1" LCD packed w/information.
It was like trying to read the amount of carbohydrates on a sack of spaghetti.
At least when I buy a bottle of Booze I can read the 100 proof warning from a distance..........ankyu.

Sorry Bro',

It actually spans from D sharp above middle C, to the G sharp above middle C.
2 1/2 " x 2 1/2" with letters smaller than the TV Guide magazine.
