That stuff is expensive. Why not use pure alcohol on a cotton bud or something?

I know what it does Gary. Deoxit de-oxidizes. It's still expensive for what it does though... :P

I don't know about Deoxit, but Posthorn Stabilant made a big improvement for my multi-board daw. Stabilised it, I would say.
Claims to enhance conductivity and tighten connections so things don't slip around due to thermal fluctuations or vibrations.

well, that'd be a nice temporay fix.
for a minute, it would be great, but since the thin gold layer would probably be gone, the copper would oxidize quickly and then things would be worse than ever...

For what it's worth... deoxit or any other de-oxidizing agent doesn't miraculously alter the oxidized metal compound to suddenly become clean, it eats away the surface of the metal just like acid solution baths do for jewelers after they've soldered a piece of jewelery.

(Sorry for the slight OT here)

Mark, i knew it was a joke, and i was laughing with you, but, we have had people here try sandpaper, so......

fwiw, i've seen deoxit do miracles, but it won't fix everything. it's expensive, but it doesn't take much....

Gary, if you start a separate thread somewhere that's about contact cleaning, I'll no doubt chime in, since polishing grade papers aren't such a bad idea imo ... :D

So this detoxit stuff is just for contact cleaning, yah?

I need to clean my cards generally. Very light coating of fine dust on 'em. Or do I just leave well alone? Dust = vintage. I am extremely careful when handling these things.

No, the company Caig make all sorts of products for consumer, commercial & industrial applications. Deoxit in it's various forms is just one of many product lines they do. There products are renowned for being excellent, but they're not daft. Depending on what type of thing you're after, some of their products are really pretty expensive. For example, the Deoxit Gold pen which is probably their most ideal product for cleaning ISA, PCI or AGP card contacts costs $23 which isn't exactly cheap considering that it only holds 6ml of contact cleaner.

i usually use the D5 spray. D5 is the stuff that fixes most problems. it's about $10 for a 5oz(200ml) spray can here....

dusting the card is a nice thing to do(beware of static electricity! air would be better than a feather duster!), but it's the contacts that must be free of contaminants.

Gary, how do get that D5 spray to only go onto the contacts instead of the areas around them as well? Seems like even with one of those little straw attachments such a spray would be going all over the place.

OK. Message understood. I have plenty of hot air available.

I stress I have the much sought after "vintage" cards.:P

It's not like they're covered in gunge. Just a barely visible layer of the very finest, top of the range, high quality dust. Of course!!
