setting up my acoustic environment

Post by hollo321 »

hey guys im in need of getting a good sounding acoustic room, in which i know almost nothing about. before i start buying foams and padding im trying to decide which of 2 rooms would be a better suited acoustic environment for electronic music, no acoustics. currently im using my underground room which is large, pretty iregullar shaped, and currently sounds 2 reverby. it also seems like a hasle to set up acoustic padding. second room is a shelter room right next door and is 72 inch(W) 112 inch(L) 98 inch(Height).and becuause its a shelter room the walls are preety thick and curently has this flanger type sound in it. heres pics of th 2 rooms. thanks

I use blankets for vocals. My main problem besides reverb is computer noise so I sometimes record in the bathroom. A lot of people want the perfect environment for mixing but listeners won't be in the same room with your monitors so it is impossible to control exactly what people will hear. Room reverb does tend to make your ears tired though. If you are on a limited budget, good monitors are better than good acoustics. It would cost a lot to do it right. Square and rectangular rooms create reverb from all the bouncing. A pro studio would not be designed this way, so now we are talking about hiring a carpenter and getting acoustic tiles and baffles etc..

Depends on the monitor speakers, but in general good monitors will need good room acoustics (normally through the room having been treated as others have mentioned) to work as desired. I'd say know your monitors, since some are actually designed to work well in rooms which aren't acoustically treated while others (most really good/expensive ones in fact) with flatter frequency responses are most definitely not. Obviously if money isn't an issue you should go ahead after planning & acoustically treat your room because it will always help no matter what monitors you have (if done properly).

Btw, it's really difficult to say which might be the best room from those photos you've posted. Ideally, you need to measure the rooms & their main features, then draw up a couple of scaled down plan view diagrams, otherwise it's almost impossible for anyone to advise on which might be the best room to use & which way to orientate your monitoring in the chosen room.

You can try Google sketchup to make a 3d model of your room. It's freeware and very easy to use.

well after much reading i found the small room will be very problematic because of its size so im gonna go with the current room. heres a scale drawing of the room and how im thinking of seting it up. whats ur opinions on this setup?(dark lines represent traps)i was thinking a 24x48 panel on the ceiling above the desk, a pair of 24x48 traps on the back wall so that they form a single 48x48 trap which is again doubled on the oposite side. also single 24x48 traps on the side of the desk which are approximated . i want to be able to get the best sounding acoustic setup so remodeling wont be an issue. thanks

the traps are great. don't forget the diffusion! it may be more important.

the best mix position is in the middle of the room. near the wall is the worst position.
