GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
Hello all,
I've had this problem before. Somehow it went away (I can't remember what, if anything, I did differently on that occasion), but now it's back.
Basically, every time I open Scope, my computer locks up and freezes. The reason I'm having this problem again is because I just did a fresh re-install of Windows (XP, SP2), and I can't for the life of me figure out why it's happening. There is bugger all installed on it, there are no IRQ conflicts, and it happens almost instantly as soon as I load SFP.
I didn't install in Standard PC mode, because (1) I've had it working with hyperthreading enabled before and (2) I've read many threads here saying ACPI mode works fine.
This locking up thing happens even when all non-essential tasks are disabled, nothing else is running, everything I don't need is disabled in the BIOS, and it's a very performance-oriented install of windows (nothing surplus to requirements and no fancy visual fluff, basically).
Can anyone advise me on what to check next? This is the third re-install of Windows I've done in a week, and nothing seems to be working...
Cheers!
Chris

Re: GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
Just to add...
Scope seems to be working perfectly on my 'internet enabled' install of Windows, but bizarrely, that's the one I've treated in a very cavalier way! It's clogged up with shite, I was slightly drunk when I set it up, there are about twenty games installed on it, it's connected to the internet with no antivirus software or anything... basically, I 'abuse' it because it's not my 'DAW installation', but it works fucking perfectly! But when I try and set up a 'clean' install on another hard drive with no extraneous crap on it, Scope locks up and I have to do a hard power-off.
This is most infuriating and I'd be most grateful for any help!
Cheers (again),
Chris

Hey there Chris...
So you've got two windows installs on the same machine that you switch between & you're trying to install Scope on both installs?

Almost!
My 'internet install' (the one I'm typing from now) is working fine, and has been for months! I started having troubles with my 'DAW install' a few weeks ago, and decided to start afresh. That's the one I'm having problems with! As far as that installation is concerned, there's only Windows and Scope, with the onboard network card disbled via the device manager. (It's enabled in the BIOS for my 'internet install', but I don't think that's the problem because like I said, there are no IRQ conflicts at all).
Cheers for the reply mate... any ideas?

Re: GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
It sounds like the fresh install might have assigned different IRQs for the Scope card/s to what the internet install has. Comparing the IRQ assignments of both installs has to be the first step mate. Posting screenshots of the IRQ assignments for both installs might help.

Back in two ticks! I'll do that right away (though I always thought IRQ allocation was done at a lower level than the OS... that said, the last time I had IRQ problems I was running Windos 95! - bear with me, I'll just check...)
Cheers,
Chris

Looks OK to me, no?
Re: GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
So does the internet install have the same IRQ assignments?

Identical, unfortunately!
*edit*
Hi Stardust, cheers for chipping in - I'll check that right now.
Just thought I'd add that I'm positive it has nothing to do with the Scope install, seeing as (on top of Windows reinstalls) I've reinstalled Scope several times (both from the CD and by copying the CD contents over to my HD, to avoid those annoying read-only problems).
I'll report back when I've checked the mobo manual...
Cheers!

post screenshot/s of your cset.ini file opened in notepad as well Chris if it's not a problem.

Re: GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
Nope, no conflicts there - the parallel port uses IRQ 5 or 7, serial uses IRQ 3 or 4, infra-red uses IRQ 3. I've got all of these disabled in the BIOS though, so I can't envisage this being the problem...
Thanks for the help though dudes, it is much appreciated.
(BTW, was it one of you two that recommended I check out the SDS Sample Drum Player? Because it's absolutely perfect for my requirements! But shortly after I started using it, I got these problems... sod's law innit, that as soon as you find an ideal way of working, your PC breaks! I should probably clarify, though, that I haven't even put SDS on that boot, so I know that isn't the problem).
Thanks again,
Chris

No problem at all - which bit though? Because my monitor's only 900 pixels tall, resolution-wise, so I can't capture it all at once!
Re: GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
All of it unfortunately mate. Just take 2 screenshots or whatever it takes.

No problemo!
It actually took three screenshots (my monitors are only 900 pixels tall, see).

Any the wiser?
Cheers!

Re: GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
Actually... couldn't I have just copied and pasted that into a post??
ARGH! This is so infuriating! Every time I try and make some bleedin' music my DAW install dies and I flip over to the internet to watch porn or play computer games! Neither of which, might I add, are particularly good for my productivity.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help wean me off my porn/computer game habits.
Cheers!

There's quite a few things that might be slightly odd there, but what's glaring at me is that you seem to have none of these entries, the most important of which are the 'Host' entries:-
[ASIO]
XTCMode=0
application=D:/Scope/App/XTCApp/XTC.pro
Pluginwrapper1=D:/Scope/App/XTCApp/vstsynthplugin.mdl
Pluginwrapper2=D:/Scope/App/XTCApp/vstplugin.mdl
Pluginwrapper3=D:/Scope/App/XTCApp/vstplugin.mdl
Pluginwrapper4=D:/Scope/App/XTCApp/vsthostplugin.mdl
[XTC-Config]
AddHost=1
[Host]
Scoperev=128
[Host-Config]
Numboards=1
Board0=Host

Re: GRR! Scope completely locking up my PC... again...
The really sad thing is, it's fucking true!
Anyway, after a cursory glance, the lines you mention appear to all relate to XTC mode... which I disabled during setup! Should I not have done that? Is there anything there that doesn't relate to XTC, and that I should definitely add given that I don't use XTC mode?
Cheers!
Chris

Never mind the XTC stuff, your cset.ini file should definately have the [Host] & [Host-Config] entries.

Okie dokie!
Is there anywhere in particular, then, that I should paste the following?
[Host]
Scoperev=128
[Host-Config]
Numboards=1
Board0=Host
Is CSET.ini sensitive to line breaks and such?
Cheers,
Chris
