Sata 2

Post by ladiki »

Does a PC, with SATA 1 (150) will work normally with a hard disk SATA 2 (300)... ?

And what about using a SATA II PCIe http://www.siig.com/ViewProduct.aspx?pn=SC-SAE012-S2

Hi,
@garyb; lately i just moved my scope card to hp xw4200, and I'm planing to upgrade my hard disk, and i found Raptor sata 2 (300) and the one in my pc is sata 1, since i didn't find the old raptor.
So, in case it will be limited by transfer rate, but it will be better with a higher cache memory 16mb instead of 8mb (old raptor), so i will go for it.

Does a SATA II PCIe is a good idea in this case ?

Cheers.

I use the Raptors and they really only add more Polyphony to Gigastudio. 7200rpm's with 8MB cache are fine.

But the Raptors last for years, and the 5 year warranty is a comfort also. Everyone else has 3 years only. As if they don't trust their own products.

The 300 VelociRaptor is the fastest HDD you can buy in that price range, and that Dog Will Hunt.

There is no speed difference though going from 150 to 300. It's theoretical at best. Even w/ RAID 10 using 5 or 6 drives the max throughput wouldn't come close to the 300 spec.

i bought a new baracuda 7200 250gb, it is quiet, it is the slim new edition. a wd 250gb of the same specifications is more quiet than baracuda. the baracuda produces this very but very slight high pitched metalic sound. the WD does not. maybe it depends on the disk and differs from disk to disk even of the same exactly type.
the raptors 36gb 10000 are more noisy than both above.

Barracudas 11 series have have a jumper setting that reduces the interface speed to SATA 1.
Don't know if WD and barracudas from previous series have this feature too.

As far I can see, maximum sustained transfer rate of current SATA disks are below SATA1 limit; just some peak performed during random access tests exceed the limit.
I've performed some benchmark using Hd Tune on a SATA 2 Barracuda showing a maximum transfer rate of 127 MB/s. I get almost the same benchmark results using SATA1 interface on P5GDC and SATA2 on DP35DP. The burst rate only is about 10MB/s higher through SATA2.
I can post detailed results if you're interested.

@ Stardust

Single plate barracudas are quiet. Double plate (like the 500GB unit) are less quiet, but quieter than old raptors..
Single plate drives have more latency, though; so less op x sec..
Unluckily, I can't tell you if my 320 GB barracuda, with its 19ms of average random access time, is fast enough for simulataneously read 23 tracks 96kHz 24 bit while writing another one, in the real world.
