Asio Vs Direct

Hey all , just a minor question that has always bugged me. I have been recording for quite some time but have always opted to record through 24 bit wave dests , but am just wondering what is the benefit or loss from using Asio. It might sound amateur and all but I never really dove into that concept. If someone has some good information or an article for me to research that would be great!!!
