In concept this seems a very good idea, DAW under Win9x stripped down to bare essentials. But I'm having a hell of a time getting my 98LITE installation to work. (Those who don't know should check out 98LITE's website.) Before I invest another long evening trying, I'd love to hear from other's experiences, whether its worth it. If you've tried/succeeded with this, post here and share your knowledge:
Really more stable/faster?
Using LITE with 98/SE/ME?
Okay with 95 Explorer or Shell swapping?
Using Micro/Sleek/other option?
Clean install or LITE over existing install?
Any "must retain" Windows features, or strip it all away?
Multiboot setup, or single O/S partition?
Any special Pulsar setup tricks/foibles?
LITE conflicts/successes with sequencers or other software?
Best LITE/drivers/apps install sequence or tricks?
Would you recommend others to try this?
All input appreciated!!!
Pulsar under 98LITE (by D-bass)
Subject: yes, it works very well!
hi,
i´m working on both of my 2 computers with 98lite. and it works as well as possible. both setups are clean 98lite setups (minimalized setup with 95explorer and absolutely no internetexplorer!). one fine thing is not to have all this welcomemessages and i think less problems by installing addons like multimediacards...
tip! i have one folder on a seperate harddisk where only setupfolders are. all driver from all cards, all programs (like pulsar including all this necessary updates!) and the 98litesetupfolder from where i´m making the setup absolutely without cd-drives... that´s easier and faster!
but i have also started 98setup and removed the devices after all. and it worked as well!
by the way: another tip: write into the msdos.sys the following lines
[options]
bootdelay=0
logo=0
it takes away a delay which is prepared by windows for the case to push F8 when you have problems (you can still push F8, when you have problems, but you have to push faster!)... you have about 15 seconds less booting! same to the ugly bootlogo which always appears when win starts... it takes important seconds of our live (always!)!
oups, i have to look for the line (maybe it is bootlogo=0) i don´t know for the moment! i have to look on my machines!
but you can do no harm to your machine when you have made a wrong line like logo=0 ... try it!
))
98lite is great!
best regards

Subject: 98LITE - Shareware?
no, it is US$25. purchase online with credit card secure payment method was painless enough (both price and procedure), but I'm having difficulty getting it to work.
looking around the web, 98LITE has a lot of loyal users, so I prsume it works well once you get it installed. I find the documentation for intsall a bit sketchy. Before I spend more time futzing with it, I was hoping to hear more from Pulsar users to see if it works ok with these boards.
nestor, you seem to be a bit of an old hand, maybe you should take a crack at this. as I said in earlier post, in concept, this is way cool - 98/SE/ME with all the junk stripped out for tiny footprint, minimal registry, etc. I am aiming for a dual boot setup, one full blown OS install for internet, other, and another (with the full OS partition hidden!) stripped way down, for DAW only
any more experienced LITE users out there?

The best way to update files on the 98lite partition is to send your your downloads from your primary internet partition (I use real download) to the second audio recording harddrive(D drive for me), or load them on a CDRW. Then, from you stripped down 98lite partition, access your update folder in the D drive. It is important to name a new folder so all the files stay together in the one folder.
I seldom have a crash now that I have all my audio stuff on the 98 lite partition. I didn't use the Win 95 version.
