Well for comprehensive study you need a comprehensive question. At the moment it is as vague as can be, it needs narrowing down:
Is hardware or software better for what effect?
In what way is one better than the other?
Both can be better in certain contexts. What are you trying to achieve?
At the end of the day there is no better, just better for certain tasks under certain conditions. A hardware 1176 is great but if you haven't the money then Vinco is fine. Likewise having M-Tron on your laptop on a plane journey is better than lugging a real Mellotron around.
In the end there is no correct answer, hence the funny replies (sorry).

I will focus on the EQ/comp/filters here...
Software gives you as much instances/copies you need for a mix....and software usually give more "graphic" tools that can become very useful !(e.g: check octaves, create markers and then create rather small curbs or boosts (a hardware EQ cannot do that so easily...)
On the other end it can be useful to have one hardware comp (for takes) and a good hardware EQ can be useful for mastering too ! Just listen to good plugins (I mean the best ones) and you wil find out that there is a huge diffrence between them as soon as the settings becomes harsh... I personnally love the DAS EQs (musical), the Brainworx EQs (smooth) Eqs and SPACEF filters within scope ... these are my favourite ones. And I would suggest Sonnox ones (sony oxford) if you need native ones. You will see that it is also a matter of taste. Just listen to what happens to the sound (e.g. : big Q + gain) and you will here how natural (or not) a software EQ can sound when "adding" what was not in the original take. Just try this with demos and then buy what you like ... The scope plugins are rather cheap and you can get a very good sound IMHO
As already mentionned, I have become an API500 fanatic (allows to rack preamp and hard effects in a rack at a lower price) and these solutions allow to get big comp and EQ (e.g. : A designs, API, ..) at a fair price (approx 500/1000 euros each). Depending on your needs (and budget !) it can be worth it (or not). Otherwise, I would buy 1 good preamp + 1 one good mike and just chose 1 or 2 good software EQs and 1/2 good softawre comp and that's it. That can be a good start !

One thing is for sure, if the Human Ear is considered hardware, that will be hard to replace.
Until that days arrives, I will use my ear to combine hardware with software according to what it tells me.
In respect to a smooth quick workflow, software flexibility is quite spoiling.
So I personally will use both to emulate " real instruments ", and their hardware equivalants.
Many of us can fool the average music listener, but fooling each other is a different story.

as long as digital hardware just runs software-algorithms inisde.
the question is analog or digital and to my ears, _nothing_ ca beat analog high-end gear

but, what about the man who use them ? he can use the best hardware or plugin , but if his ears are equal to zero...the result will be equal to zero.
concerning plugins,a good ergonomy is better than lots of parameters everywhere ( BX DIGITAL,VINCO,DAS2A for example ).
