Problem with pcm-91 reverb and Pulsar2.

Post by Jo Staats »

Hello I use Cubase and Pulsar2 as my soundcart and the pcm-91 reverb from Lexicon as my main reverb. I still use the old Big Mixer in Pulsar2. My audio from Cubase goes into the mixer via the "Asio 24 source " modules. When I put some externe reverb on this it doesnt sound right (the reverb has no depth and stereo-image, it is propably mono).
When audio comes in (not from Cubase but for example a multimediaplayer) via the "Wave source" module the reverb sounds awesome. Which drivers should I use to get good reverb on my audiotracks from Cubase?
By the way, should I set Pulsar2 as master or slave?
Can this be an IRQ problem or a driver problem?

THANKS FOR ANY RESPONSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi and welcome...

What exactly is your routing for the multimediaplayer when it sounds right? Is it wave source > spdif out > reverb > spdif in > mixer > analog out? or do you connect the reverb directly to a hardware mixer?
I assume spdif as you talk about master or slave. remember aux out on the big mixer is mono of course, maybe there is your problem...

Maybe some folks that have the pcm might be of better help... some more info on routing might help though

If its returning to the bigmixer in stereo, it could be that the 2 channles are on different DSPs and there is a tiny delay between them. i remember bigmixer did that sometimes.

Brotha' Man Jo,

Are you using the AES / EBU's on the 91, or the analog I/O's?

I can't speak of the Big Mixer as I have never used it, but I do use Stereo AUX's to apply the 91 to my sampled content.

Hi there,

thanks for you reply!

I send the signal via SP-DIF to the reverb and it comes back via analog. Which mixer from the Scope family do you use and does it work in stereo? How are your connections and routings. It would be of great importance to me!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE !!!!!!!!

One thing that is certain, is that Pulsar needs to be master as you only go out digitally into PCM.
Scope4Live is probably using a 3rd party mixer. None of the mixers included in SFP has stereo auxes as far as I know. If Neutron is right, your problem can be solved by using one of the newer mixers which have a button to phase align the mixer channels (which takes a bit more DSP power).

There were reasons it was known round these parts as Bug Mixer for a long time.

hi Jo,

I just noticed that you have another topic started all privately for me :D
Well, better keep one problem in one thread, you'll get better help like that...
High Borg, thanks for your reply!!!
I give you my routings:

1) the good reverb routing: multimediaplayer >wave source1>Big Mixer: in the
mixer I use auxsend 1 +auxsend2 (maximum level) > Pulsar2 SP-DIF Dest
(the signal to the reverb is digital and from the reverb it is analog, be-
cause I need the "digital in" from Pulsar2, to accept my signals from my
VS-880 harddiscrecorder where I record my vocals). The analog sig-
nal goes via Pulsar2 Analog Source (L+R) to the Aux Return 1 in the mixer
which is stereo (I think)).

2) the bad reverb routing: audio from Cubase > Asio 24 bit Source > Big
mixer (from here it is the same as above).

In the Big Mixer itself I read in aux send 1 and 2 that it is connected to the Pulsar2 SP-DIF Dest module. When those are mono how do you explain the good sound in the 1e routing?
You should have the VS-880 as master then, and pulsar and the pcm91 as slaves.

Does the cubase channel sound right without adding the reverb?
I suggest trying a different mixer because of the reason Neutron brought up...

good luck

Also worth having a look at: how are your channels pannings?
Phasing is probably the reason for your bad sound.
