iriver T60 1GB, some advice please.

Hi

Does anybody use the iriver T60 1GB mp3 player? How does it sound and work?

I’m considering getting this one as the generic one I had died on me. I’ve been told that the iriver have in general a pretty good sound quality, is that true?

I'm using a Muvo 1 gig. It is $50 at Walmart. I like it. After a couple of years it is still working even though I dropped it many times.. I paid 4 times as much because I got it when it was new.

I want a iriver because they are said to be great sounding, and because the 1gb unit it is affordable for me. I have read some reviews, but would like somebody here (a musician) to tell me that it sounds actually great!

never tried it, but i read its got good responses on soundquality. you should also cosider battery time. and 19 hours on a single AAA battery isnt bad at all.

but am waiting for somebody here to tell me "yes, it sounds great", because I trust musicians ears, and not sellersman ones...

Well, I found musicians that finally told me it is great sounding.

It has some minor problems: the joystick is a bit difficult to get used to, then there is no USB feed, only AAA, and then, only 1GB, but that's all I need.

What I like MUCH is that it supports OGG Q10, which is superb. I've done it, so now it's me that is going to tell you...

well, I've tried a recent iPod with my own Sennheiser plugs and found it's audio surprisingly good - according to my memories about an older model.
Among the demo stuff was a track from Miles 'A Kind of Blue' and the original tape hiss was still present.
Anyway, next time I'll rip the CD and feed the uncompressed files to the pod and then we'll know

General soundstage was very 'open' and lacked the typical sound of cheapo digital gear - that 'round' bumb of the basses plus some over hissey high mids.

I already happily have it and can tell by myself…

The unit looks great in its unique triangular shape, has a great feeling to it in your hands, it has a beautiful white metallic color with crossing lines which help you to hold it firmly even if your hands are wet with perspiration (oh yea, Chile), and it is sturdy enough to the eye and use. Fine, distinguished shapes in every detail, looking and feeling as a high quality product, despite its price. The tiny screen is great too, it shows very clear information and it is easy to look at it. Of course, do not think about watching pictures on it, this is just a joke, useless to say the least, I think they should not include features that people will laugh at.

The joystick problem is not that hard… I don’t know why people have made up such a big deal out of it; surely they are kids that want everything to be perfect because they have a lot of money to spend on gadgets of all sorts... It’s true that if you are not careful you do something else than you planned, but it is simple and intelligent, and you soon get your way.

SOUND:
Oh well, it is not the best in the market for sure, but it is very close to them. In fact, I had to pay close attention to listen to the difference from the T60 compared with my own system using Scope. So… not too bad you could say! High frequencies are absolutely great, middle frequencies have a slightly distinctive character, but fortunately you have to direct your attention hard to hear it. Low frequencies are pretty good, very round and clear. EQ are good enough, SRS and the so, but I have not played with it much so far, it has arrived a couple of hours before writing.

Great channel separation! The stereo field is truly SUPERB, very well achieved, perhaps the best characteristic of this player in terms of sound.

What is important to me is that you can pay attention to the music and enjoy it without even noticing it is a player unit or whatever. If I just put the headphones onto your head and let you have a go, you would think there is a rather good quality system somewhere behind you.

So, from 0% to 100%, I’ll give it an 89% of quality sound, compared with my system mp3 experience, using the same Sony headphones and Scope.

It records in a surprisingly good quality that I can work with, so even if I never thought about it, it is also a way to create some natural samples that well edited in Wavelab, could end up being some interesting texture experiments.

With 1GB, I’m very happy; I don’t need a large capacity unit, and give up with the sluggishness problem of the 2 and particularly the 4 GB versions, which is quite slow.

All in all, an excellent player

I had a go with the T60 for about 7 hours without stop, listening to a wide range of music to fully try it while working at home doing some carpentry. To my surprise, no headache or bad feelings like with other players I have had. That tells me that there are not bad hidden frequencies. The one I had before would cause you a headache after a few hours of continuous use.

I'm writing a bit late, but here we are...

I'm talking about the middle frequencies, you know? But now that I've used the EQ, I can tell you can do what you want with this little unit and fix any problem you may have with your pair of headphones. It is simply superb in sound quality.

I had recently travelled a long way, 7 hours to go, then 7 to get back, and all the 14 hours listening to some good, reasonably loud music… No problems at all! No headaches, no stress, no ear numbness, nothing. I enjoyed to the most, 14 hours of music!

No doubt, the iRiver trade for MP3 are of superior quality compared to most of the market!

I dropped my Muvo one too many times and today I busted the circuit board. No problem I thought, I will just go down to Walmart and get another one. When I got there I found they no longer carry the Muvo so I got an RCA Pearl instead. My first impression was that the sound quality is simply outstanding. You would not think something this inexpensive could sound this good. It has a 2 color backlit display and you can add more memory to it via a Micro SD slot. It has a built in USB plug which flips out. At first the way it organizes music was maddening because it does not use the simple file and folder system. Instead it uses tags. I'm editing the genre tags. I can change multiple file tags at once in Windows. I have three genres now: ambient, podcasts, and my music.

I've been running the battery for over 12 hours now and it is still going but I plan to be using rechargeable batteries when this runs out. It takes a single AAA battery. The battery compartment sticks out a little in the back making a bump some people don't like but this is the price you pay for being able to replace the battery. The front feels so smooth you want to touch it and the buttons seem very solid. Once you get used to the tags thing it's nice. I found a better way to search for music is by album so I will make the podcasts album tag read podcast so they will in effect seem to be in the same folder and not clutter up the list when looking for music albums.
