Scrubbing in VDAT... possible?

Post by chriskorff »

Hello!

Has anyone managed to get the scrub function to work in VDAT? I only spotted two topics here (ages ago!) related to this specific problem, and I thought that since it seems like such a useful feature, more people would've mentioned it if it just didn't work at all... am I right?

Cheers!

A gentle bump, if you don't mind...

Seriously, I've done a lot of searching and only two or three people have complained about this not working - apologies if this is old news for everyone here, but I've only just started using VDAT and I really want to know if there's any way to get scrubbing to work!

If someone could enlighten me with either:

A) Yes, you just need to do X, Y and Z, and it'll work!

B) I've never got it to work, but other people have.

or...

C) It doesn't work, it has never worked you bleedin' idiot, stop complaining and get on with it.

That would be great.

Cheers!

I dunno... ...but then I blamed it on my generation one Pulsars, which have a slower IO system than current cards.
On the other hand I made a lot of stupid assumption about VDAT - ok, for simple tasks that doesn't matter much - fairly easy to just capture a bunch of files.

But then I found out that this really is an Adat, regarding all actions and controls (well, at least it pretends to be...), so you won't get very far without the original Alesis Doc (it's online)

Takes some time to read and understand, I'm still not finished with it, but it helps tremendously.
One simply misses the point time and again, misguided by a 'computer record only' experience.

But I've really learned to appreciate VDAT's recording, since I tried a few native apps recently ... :P :D

cheers, Tom

Cheers Astro,

Yeah, I think I understand about VDAT basically being an ADAT (just without the likelihood of mechanical fuckups). I haven't used an ADAT in years, but if I remember correctly, you had to hold play and ff/rw at the same time to scrub them. Without plugging a second mouse into my computer, I can't quite see how that would work with VDAT...

Cheers for the help though, I might give the old ADAT manual a bit of a read actually. I did like using them, but they chewed up a couple of my tapes, and that's why I've steered clear of them for so long. Still, it's nice to concentrate on what you're hearing, rather than looking at waveforms all the time.

Cheers!

Err... excuse me, you think if you plug another mouse into your computer you get a second pointer, you are joking right ?

Having said that I supposed you'd need different coloured pointers, otherwise
you wouldn't know what the hell's going on.

Yes, the thought of using two mouses (mice?) at the same time is an interesting one, and might save us a fair bit of money on MIDI controllers!

@ TGSTGS: Scrubbing won't translate very well from English in this context — it normally means 'to clean something with vigour'. But with respect to VDAT, it means fast-forwarding or rewinding while listening to the material (basically high-speed playback, forwards or backwards)

Also, can I take it that, since no one has replied saying that it DOES work, it basically doesn't?

Cheers, and have a good weekend!

The VDAT manual says :
Rewind: Rewind moves the virtual tape
position quickly back, simulating a tape
machine’s physical rewind function. If
rewind is engaged during playback, the
track signals are audible (cueing). This
helps greatly when you’re looking for
specific passages.

Fast Forward: Fast-forward moves the
virtual tape position quickly ahead,
simulating a tape machine’s physical fastforward
function. As above, if fast forward
is engaged during playback, the track
signals are audible (cueing) to help you
find specific passages quickly.
It does not say "press the play and ff buttons at once". So it should work with just one mouse :D

Bonjour dude,

Yeah, I read that bit in the manual, I was talking about the Alesis ADAT. Also, that bit in the VDAT manual is a lie (!) as far as I'm concerned — the only thing that happens when you press FF or RW during playback is that it rewinds or fas-forwards slower than usual (on my computer at least). If anyone has any different experiences, then please let me know!

Au revoir,

Chris

Are you implying that manuals might be inaccurate and / or software could potentially have a bug? How dare you!

Bugs? Inaccurate manuals? Don't be silly, this is PlanetZ! :P

I'm still waiting (in hope) for someone to tell me I'm doing something wrong though. I've tried RW and FF during playback, after pressing stop, after disengaging the tape, and through the VRC, and it still doesn't scrub!

I wonder is there is a keyboard command that must be held while using the mouse on the forward and rewind bottoms that isn't mentioned in the manual. Just a thought..
