Swapping Cable Whips

Post by t_tangent »

I want to get rid of my old Pulsar 1 card which has a Plus cable whip, i.e. (AES/EBU, XLR Connections, etc) and swap the cable whip with the one on my Scope Pro card that has a Classic Plate and its cable whip, i.e. (RCA, SPDIF connections, etc)

I have a feeling this can't be done though due to the different signal levels, alrhough it probably could work with swapping a cable whip between a classic plate and a z-link plate. But if anyone who knows a bit more about this can verify whether this is possible or not, thanks

The 19thbear did this on a card that came w/ different I / O's, to make it an AES / EBU card.

It works flawlessley, and of course I can't imagine using any other reverb than one w/ the AES / EBU's after hearing it A/B'd to ADAT I/O'd hardware reverbs.

I believe if you search in the General Discussion Thread you might find it.

It seemed to be a simple swapping, but don't quote me.

no, you can't switch the classic20 and plus whips. classic20 and z-link will swap.

Jimmy, I think that Gary is right, and looking into it a bit more it seems that it is only possible if one wanted to swap the Classic and Z-Link cable whip as they use the same unbalanced signal levels, but not possible to swap with the plus plate as that uses a balanced signal. I guess the pcb will be built slightly differently on that. Thanks though

Gary, thanks for the info. I guess I will need to buy a complete new Plus plate and cable whip then if I need the AES/EBU connections. That will work will it?

yes, the plates are transferrable.

if you buy a plus plate, i'm sure that you can sell the classic20....

otherwise you can use an aes/ebu to sp/dif adaptor like this....

Thanks guys,

Yup, that will be the way to go. Its not urgent right this moment, but I will keep an eye out for a plus plate or will buy one and then sell the classic plate later on. Anyways that has helped clear up my earlier confusion. Thanks again :)
