earth planet protection ... very low consuption PC !!!

Post by sonolive »

hi all,

like few (many) of you (us ...) i am wondering about eath planet care and energy saving !!! so ...

i am building a very very low consuption PC, based on a mini itx main board that works under 12 Volts DC ...

the main power consuption stage is the HD ...

so i am trying to install winXP on a bootable 2 Go Compact Flash memory ...

Any of you, could tell me what not to install ... how to configure in order to get a winXP usable, with a SFP 4 on this 2Go drive ...

when i usually install XP i got something like 1.8 Go ... can it be less, much more less ??? but with scope fusion working !!!

i wil post some pics and tell you how it works (or doesn't) ... what we can and can't do ... on this thread ...

cheers

Hello Olive!

This is very interesting, and I have also been thinking along these lines of low-power consumption for a scope system - mostly so I could have scope on my sun-powered caravan while travelling / camping.

How are you addressing the power for the VGA? It seems to me that a good way would be to have a laptop pc with a Magma box. This way, the pc takes 12v directly, and you get low consumption on the screen and the cpu (laptops are 60W-90W). For Scope, the magma 1 and 2 slot models can take a 12v PSU as well (I have experimented with an M3 120W 12v DC/DC PSU and 3 scope cards, it has all sorts of surge and over/under voltage protection, and it works really well).

In my system, this adds up to less than 200W for the whole compter system - but then you have to add the sound system, even if only a headphone amp. A "flash" hard drive could lower this even more... Of course, magma boxes are much less performant than onboard PCI, and if you're using a MacBook Pro, you have to select a model with the latest (pericom) chipset, or it just won't work.

As for installing Windows, you can use nlite and build a custom installation disc and remove all services and drivers you don't need (as well as adding your own) so as to get a smaller instalation size. With the addition that you can preset all the tweaks to the system, and it will install everything the first time.

Hope this helps. It's a good cause to decrease our dependency on energy, and if we can rationalize our studios, it will be possible to run them effectively with alternative power sources.

Cheers!

well, I've built such a box in a 1 unit rack case with a PCI extender to turn the card 90 degrees.
Mostly because I wanted an old Pulsar (4DSPs) as a dedicated guitar processor.
The VGA is onboard, so that's not a problem.

there are some pitfalls, tho...
the industrial 1-unit rack cases for ITX boards fit only a short card, I had to cut the front cover to get the card inside - it's less than 1 cm missing.
With a 6 or 14 DSP card you need a deeper case - dunno if it's available for ITX mounting.

the PSU that came with my N10K probably was too weak to feed the extra PCI card, at least I had a hell of EMV noise, making the system completely unusable.
Onboard audio (Pulsar unplugged) was perfectly silent, tho, so it's probably the power regulation due to overload.

With or without PCI extender the noisefloor was about -60dB regardless of the OS.
Strangely there was no noise when I verified the board's PCI performance (a VIA thing, but 4 Masterverbs with a P1) before I ordered the rack case...
As this left me with the option that the board itself might be damaged, so I didn't invest in a stronger PSU.
Instead I put the Pulsar back to it's compagnons in a non-mobility rack on a regular Pentium 3 board.

The system disk is a SanDisk 1GB Flash Disk (an ATA plug with memory inside) which performs very well and reliably for > 1 year in different boxes with Win98 and Win2K, using PCLite and XPLite - for simplicity I prefer the commercial versions ;)

A 'normal' CF card in a disk adapter will usually drag the IDE bus down to interrupt mode. Mind you - both channels :o
Only recent ones (I noticed it first with the 266x type) can do DMA.
It depends on the interface inside the CF disk, but there's no indication what's inside, so it's a trial and error process.
I haven't tried the latter (Transcend 4GB) as system drives yet.

Same confusion applies to USB Flash memory - a wide range in performance.
The fastest I found (Buffalo) write 700MB to the stick in 45 seconds, just to give a figure to compare.
Be prepared for 70 Euro per 4 GB (currently), the cheapos are lame for obvious reasons...

Very Interesting Stuff.

Tom,
If I may inquire which PCI Riser card you use. I was looking at a 20.1" D x 5.25" H x 19" W 3U ATX, and was hoping that these could be used.

http://www.mycableshop.com/items.asp?Cc ... =0&Tp=&Bc=

I was hoping to use 2 x Full Length AES / EBU's that are of the B angle type that would be at a 90 degree angle over the last PCI slots, in the oppisite direction of the CPU.

Using an older style ATX from Supermicro where the graphics chip might be used.

Do you have any suggestions?

This would be a 3U ATX to be used as a Scope only board, which maybe could be upgraded to use a RAM based sampler other than the STS series, where RAM samples could be used. A hardware effects unit would occupy the 4th space in the Rackmounted case, w/ the ancient and noble QY700 sitting atop the case w/ a small flatscreen.

Your basic band in a box.

But low power consumption, and no moving mechanical parts would be included. I am told that the expense of this is no concern, but rather stability, so I might even get to buy an SSD, or something smaller like what you use to store the O.S. + Apps, and another larger ( SSD ) for the sample content.

As usual your knowledge and help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Danke Mein Bruder,

BTW Brotha' Man Tau,....

Is that 3U being used for your experiment? Sounds really cool, a Scope camping DAWg.....Marvellous.

Good luck to all of you guys.

Jimmy, the extender was a specific type for the motherboard I used to fit to the backside of that specific 1-unit case.
Electrically it looked like a straight-through connection.

But that's different if you want more than one card, you need special adapters for the mobo then - but afaik Supermicro is probably the best choice in this domain.
If an extender exists at all, then with SM - as they have lots of server boards out there.
I'd rather prefer a regular 3 or 4 units case though, as the backside needs specifically drilled and cut openings and server cases are usually way too deep.
Imho you can use a board with onboard video without sacrificing performance, then you don't have the problem to be too close to the graph card.

btw I've placed a Pulsar right beneath (1/10th of an inch) a GForce 8600 passive.
At least it did get fried immediately... but I wouldn't hold my breath on it in a closed case... :D
it was a super cheapo (65 Euro) Gigabyte 946GMX-S2 (whatever that means) with a Realtek ALC888 codec that seems to have a stunning audio performance at first glance

cheers, Tom

Thanks Brosky.

I was thinking Supermicro would be the right choice as well. I still have that ancient P4SCT+II, and the zero RAID low profile card which I never use. But there were so many options for that board for the PCI slots, as well as the PCI-X 64bit flavor also. They work hand in hand w/ Adaptec and other server based companies that take basic boards up a few levels.

I will begin hunting.

I was told by a gent that a 3 slot riser, using the upper and lower most slots would reduce heating issues, and it's easy to use a Dremel rotary tool to install a side case fan for safe measures.

BTW after 1 month of badgering the MTron folks I recieved an email on their operating tempuratures. No mechanical parts, and identical tempuratures as HDD's? WTF. I think I'd rather screw mother nature a little longer, and stash the cash for a rainy day.

hello JimmY!

Yup, that was my intention, Scope on wheels... I thought I had nailed it, but small things just keep coming up, and it's not quite ready yet.

The 3U is only 17" deep, and I can only find one case that will fit, from I-StarUSA, the D-300AS:

http://www.istarusa.com/rackmount_chass ... 300as.aspx

It's only $150 in aluminum (+60 for a 400W PSU). and it would fit perfectly. I tried to order one, but it would cost $300 in shipping, and with taxes, it would come to like $800, soooo... it's a different thing altogether. I can't find a short depth 3U in Europe, if anybody has any contacts, pleeease let me know! For that amount of money, maybe I can have one custom-made or modified to fit.

And the Magma has also been a heap of trouble, and no replacement for a dedicated DAW. And I need to get work done, not experiment around. My idea now is to build a secondary scope system just for synths- a 15 DSP card, with Solaris, Modular, SpaceF and Flexor. This will be on the 2 slot magma attached to a laptop, with an appropriate USB keyboard/ controller, should be great for jamming or creative getaways...

A wandering DAWg!

Be sure, I'll keep you posted!

All the best, amigos!

I happen to have one.

If you like I would be happy to buy one and ship it to you. The PSU sucks though.

I could get one to you for much cheaper than 150 from ebay, and the shipping would be maybe 80 bucks tops. I paid 90 from an ebay store. This is the 5.25 ATX 3U I was speaking of. I want to use this in a 4U SKB Shockrack w/ a Q20 ADAT hardware reverb. My new production group starts gigging on the 1st, and this time around I have such a small setup. This would put the groups entire rig in a bag and a box, as they must use all house props and FOH. Fine by me. I could even hire an elderly half deaf soundman / roadie for this rig !!

I am happy a Sore Dick Deal is being put to good use. Stewardesses must think you're some eccentric private pilot.

Actually just a Scope Warrior on wheels, ankyuvarymush.

Jimmy,

I would be very happy to take on that offer! If there's any chance you can find out how much it really costs to ship it here, I'd be extremely grateful!

BTW, any chance i can use a regular ATX PSU in that box? The standard ones do look crappy, but there isn't much space in there... i thought about an external PSU, but I'd rather have it inside...

Please let me know - it's probably better if we take this by PM so as not to go too OT on this honourable topic.

Things are looking brighter! I'm hoping to get some international action next year, so maybe this'll fly after all!

Thanks in advance,

now you really made everything easier for Sonolive, guys
Personally I don't believe in actions to spare energy to the limit.

Developments in population grow and economical growth of the socalled 'second' and 'third' world are completely overruling any effect of being economical, specially on the long term.
The keyword in energy is being 'energy-neutral', just like there is 'CO2 neutral'.
There are already many companies which succeed to do this, like glasshouse farmers using biogaz and energy feedback technologies.

Shortening your shower time?
Pure nonsense, it's a matter of time before the effect is overtaken by other (inevitable) developments.

agreed for the most part.

the only exception being, the earth needs more CO2!!!!
hubird

Post by hubird »

at least on the long term :-D (say 10.000 years).
I also got to get my doubts about the CO2 story, as long term history shows (indeed) a very doubtfull relationship between CO2 omission and climate changes.
Let's agree about the aims of the whole discussion: keeping the Earth a safe place for anyone in the world.
Climate change or not, a energy neutral economy will be good for anything in the future, it's the least we can do :-)

Scope only needs 200w if 1 x HDD is used.

2 HDD's w / 256MB AGP card or PCI-e would need a 300watt PSU just to play it safe.

I will check it all out for you and have prices after the 30th.

Hang Tight, as I am upgrading w/ one of these same units in '08 / Jan. w/ any luck.

yup, sorry for going OT

Jimmy: thanks a bunch, and no hurries!

Hubird, if I understand you correctly, I agree with what you're saying. When I think about power-saving, it's not so much about "saving the environment", as much as it is about having a bit more independence from the general system.

What I mean is that I can run a 12v 200W system on solar power for a lot longer than a 220v 500W. In other words, I can generate the amount of power needed more easily if it takes only 200W. Effectively how long, and what for is another question, but this is how I'm thinking about this power consumption thing, I'm not going "Al Gore" on you :)

We do get a lot of sun in Portugal, and I know this is doable here...

be sure, I'm not against economical use of energy, I'm just saying it's not the solution to the planet's energy problem.
But you said already you agree with me :-)
Politically it's much better to have a world economy that is not dependent from 'third world' resources like oil.
Away with the Arab and other totally corrupted gouvernments which keep their population under the thump with violence and terror.
The O. B. Ladens should focuss on them instead of on the profitting rich 'western world'.
If only the aim was a democratic society...

hi,

here are pics to let you understand the hardware i use ...

about power consumption :
after having measured the power, i noticed that using a CF is quite the same as using a 2.5 HD !!! i thought at first it would be a great difference ... but no !
only 0.1 A under 24.1VDC !!!

so the interest of CF could only be the use in "difficult" conditions where a HD could be unstable ...mechanically speaking ... in a car, a boat ...

here are some results : (under 24.1 V DC)
masure is done under the BIOS after i has been stabilized (30 sec)
by experience , it is less under windows (not working , just "waiting ")

A -- intel mini itx board (1.3ghz / giga DDR 400 / 1 PATA SLOT / 1 PCI SLOT / USB / GIGALAN ...) + M1 PSU (very interesting psu , with few working modes ...)

- with 80Go 3.5 HD = 1.18 A = 28.5 watts
- with 80 Go 2.5 HD = 1.04 A = 25 watts
- with 2 Go CF ( bootable via a IDE>>CF adapter) = 1.03 A = 25 watts

B -- Epia VIA vith c7 1 ghz / GIGA DDR 400 / 2 IDE / 1 PCI / USB / LAN / 1 CF DRIVER (not bootable) / 1 PCMCIA SLOT (good for magma !!!)

- with 80Go 3.5 HD = 1.28 A = 31 watts
- with 80 Go 2.5 HD = 1.04 A = 27.2 watts
- with 2 Go CF ( bootable via a IDE>>CF adapter) = 1.03 A = 27 watts

not tested yet : 8 " TFT Touch screen display that works under 12 VDC .
very nice display, i already use it in my car for my carPC ! GPS / audio / video ...

about win xp on the CF : standard sp2 install ... i will try to optimise with the tools you gave me ... thx !

it works but i am afraid as astro said that i do not use the best ADAPTER / CF
it seems to be a bit slow !!! but have to test further !!! but in fact not so important as SFP works live on its own DSP ...
The system disk is a SanDisk 1GB Flash Disk (an ATA plug with memory inside)
what is this ??? any link ?
It seems to me that a good way would be to have a laptop
not so sure !!!
- laptops work usually under 18/19 VDC and from a 12V battery you need a converter that itself loose power !

- you can not separate the display from the centrel unit !!!

- even if magma works very well , it is for sure a bit less performant than a onboard PCI ...
Tau i don't really agree when you say (write) "much less perfrmant"
a bit less is better i think, i use one with my VAIO, it's really nice !!!

this is for now ... i will go further in my tests !!! and let you know

cheers

hi hubird

i definitely do not agree wiyh your arguments !!!

OK energy saving and earth halth IS FOR SURE a global political worldwild problem and might be resolved on a wild field by governant !!!

but your thoughts are very dangerous ... at least not for us , i mean adults ... but for our children !!!

Do you have children hubird ? i hope so ...

Do you tell them : "heuu keep the light on while leaving the bathroom , it's a nonsense put it off "?

do you explain him or her that he can let water open as long as he wants ?

do you tell him : my son, throw the paper through the window while driving your car !!!

We adult are already lost for this cause, hopefully some of us try to do their best !!! but THE CHILDREN ... who will show them what to do ? and what will we teach them ???

we can polemic about the interest of kyoto or CO2 ... this is important and we will have to solve many problems ... but WE ALSO HAVE TO BE EXAMPLES FOR OUR CHILDREN !

my thoughts !!!

sorry it's a bit hard to find my words in english about these subjects !!! i hope everyone understand !!!

cheers

no one can argue that it's good to be wasteful. there is quite a bit of useable energy available, except for politics. there's certainly nothing wrong with being energy effecient.

I hate to go OT here, but,.....

I gotta jump in and say, I dont believe in man mad global warming. This is a dangerous lie.

If anyone does truly believe in this myth, then ask yourself, is recylcing paper the way to save the world.
The answer is obvoiusly No.

What dya mean 'what am I talking about'
We are told everyday by government...Recycle your paper, it'll save the world.
That must be right, I mean the government wouldnt lie, would they?

Of course they would, its their job. It just so happens that this lie is one of the more dangerous and evil ones.

But recycling paper is good. erm... it will save us all. it will, it will [/cross fingers in hope]

I say this is silly. If ya really want to save the worls using paper, then the only way to do so is to waste it.

Paper is made from trees. These trees are grown in huge tree farms. the more new paper that is needed by the world the more trees these farms must grow.
Now heres the kicker, what do trees do..... yup, thats right, they turn CO2 into oxygen.
so logically it makes sense to waste paper, thus ensuring that the tree farms get bigger, and grow more young trees. (also: young growing trees use more CO2 that old established ones)

Why are we constantly lied to about this subject. This is dangerous.

thank you

hemp would be better than trees for fiber pulp, but that's another subject. wantonly killing even farm trees seems so wrong to me...it's like mass slaughter of cattle, disrespectful and brutal. i'm not against using wood or eating beef, but it's not necessary to be pigs either....just mho.

really though Olive, this is an interesting project, thanks!
