Intel X38 Express Chipset

Post by dawman »

Intel is as usual very clever,
They release chipsets so their 1st tier developers can make some serious cash before they come out with a mobo that cannot be approached. Smart business, as Hyman Roth said in Godfather II,.........................I always make my partners money.

This new chipset will have a kick ass BIOS for overclocking, totally radical for Intel. Support for DDRII, as well as the immature DDRIII.

This board will have support for Core Duo CPU's, and Quads. I see now why AMD is pushing for the SSE5 instruction set. They cannot top Intels new 45nm fabrication. So it is a valid way to corner a small area of the market to stay afloat. The same way they came out with 64bit CPU's ahead of Intel. I bet Bill Gates actually owns both of these corporations silently, and watches us all fight to give him our money. :D

@ any rate, Intels new board will have 2 and 3 32bit PCI designs, as well as 2 x PCI-e x 16 slots. I know I will be using this with Gigastudio 4/ GVI, and 2 x 15DSP / 1 x 6DSP config. Low latency DDRII ( CL3 ), and 2 new 175 USD Raptor X's.

That DAWg'll HUNT !!

I agree, but once I started using GVI I realised the powerful way that samplers could be used live.

Scope needs very little thankfully, but these big sampler apps are my reasons to use a quad. I have seen how powerful the E series did, then witnessed the 10% increase with a cheap quad. The new quads @ 45nm will allow more libraries to be loaded, and I rather like Tascams GigaPulse IR on acoustic samples.

But my ancient Scope DP / giga 2.54 DAW which uses the P4SCT+II mobo runs flawlessley, and was built 4 years ago. I never tweak that one, as I could fuck up a steel ball. GaryB will finally get to see that one this December. That is if he still comes to the MGM and gets full access to the David Lee Roth / Van Halen reunuion. It sold out in Washington DC in the first 30 Minutes !! Record companies fear such success, as they see not a dime of it.

Intel also recently slotted an x48 into their schedule where it didn't exist earlier.

Yes,
Now that their subordinates made plenty of cash on the P35's, which Intel never made a comsumer mobo for.

You gotta apperciate their predictable nature. I do really like the BIOS w/ OC'ing though. Perhaps Asus made a deal with them, as they are always the top OC'r's, along w/ DFI. Abit lost it's edge when they tried to use cheap capacitors and had lost a key engineer to another competitor. They are trying to catch up.

Christmas will be great this year for all of us !!

Just to update the thread a bit more, a lot of X38 previews have been showing up now. Here's some links for a glimpse of some of the bleeding edge:

The abundance of PCIE on the NorthBridge seems like a potentially useful feature. And it will be interesting to see how well PCIE 2.0 and the new Intel
chipset in general perform once these products start to mature. So far it looks
like nobody would need to feel sorry that they are running 975X or P35...

Thought this report from TechReport was good on the technology comparison:

http://techreport.com/articles.x/13351

It looks like until we get cheap DDR3 at 1333 and/or PCIE 2.0 peripherals, the X38 does nothing better than the P35.

(It is fun, on some of the other sites to see some of the Duo's kicking the Quads, but that's mostly just a side effect of application writing. Over time, that incongruity should subside.)
