Luna 2496 I/O Box doesn´t work anymore

Post by Anonex »

Hi there, i´m using Creamware LunaII and PS, quite old cards. Used them for bout 6-7 years now, with a luna 2496 I/O Box, which doesn´t work any longer.

When i plug the Luna Firewire Cable into the box all leds are flashing red for one single time, then nothing happens. Loading the Z-Link Modules in SFP 4.0 doesn´t make the Power Led light, in the Controlbox for the Samplerate the tiny red light next to LunaII Z-Link flashes from time to time.

Any Suggestions?

try another (universal) cable, or try cutting away the plastic on the front edge of the connectors a bit :-)

Thanks for your help, but the I/O Box doesn´t do anything, even with another cable or the cutted plastic edge. Connecting it to the other Z-Link Interface on my second card doesn´t help too. Seems it´s finally gone, although i don´t have any clue why...

I opened the box to see if it has any visible injuries like smoldered parts, but can´t see anything.

:(

was this box usually plugged in or was it connected everytime when needed ?
in other words was it (more or less) frequently plugged in and out ?

I don't want to worry you, but powered FireWire lines seem to be able to damage the interface if the internal 'connection sequence' within the plug is 'wrong'.
In particular if the plug is soldered to the board and not fixed to the case the cable side can be inserted in a tilted way - we lost 3 external drive cases in the office this way...
not very likely, but it might explain a 'sudden death' of the box (never had one myself btw)

do you power it by Z-link or by a wallwart ?

considering the age of the unit the internal power regulation is a more probable candidate for failure. As you've already opened it for visual inspection you might check the voltages by a multimeter.
Typically there may be 3.3, 5, 12, 15 Volt (not all are always present) in such units.
You can guess the values from the regulation circuits.
Does any of the big capacitors shows leakage ?

but of course the best option is to check regular repair possibilities first.

good luck, Tom

the box was connected all the time, so no plugging around. ;)
it´s powered by Z-Link, there is no possibility to use a Wallwart for powering the box. I´m gonna check it with the multimeter, not a single cap is leaking in there.

I guess repairing this one might be much more expensive than buying an used one. Maybe I´m gonna switch to the ADAT board and get some decent I/O gear or stuff. Hard decisions to make :-?
