Greetings,
I'm new, and I'm considering purchasing pulsar 1 off someone whose made me an offer. However, I already have a fairly decent sound card for my needs, and really want it for the DSP power to include non-native virtual instruments in Cubase VST, which I am very fond of. I'm starting to get wind though that this may not all work out the way I want...
I plan on getting a UAD-1 for effects, and wanted to get the pulsar for instruments (synths and sampling), but I'm wondering if this is going to work? I was under the impression that all pulsar 1 instruments and effects would automatically be available in Cubase VST, like they will be with UAD-1. I'm now starting to hear only specific effects are XTC/VST compatible, and that XTC might not actually work in VST anyway with Pulsar 1!
Now, I do have Propellerhead's Reason as well, and don't mind using Rewire to get it all connected. I don't have to use the VST standard, but I do like to do my mixing in Cubase. Not knowing much about how pulsar 1 works (and is the only difference between 1 and 2 the number of DSPs?), is there another way to use the instruments in Cubase if XTC doesn't work? Please help...
My setup:
Asus A7m266 > AMD Athlon 1.4 ghz > 512 MB DDR RAM > ATI Radeon VIVO > Audiophile 24/96 > Dual 7200 HD's > Cubase VST 5.1
Pulsar 1 w/ XTC w/ Cubase 5.1 I'm new & considering purchase
The general feling seems to be that XTC is crap. I wouldn't touch it, and for you that probably means you won;t get a Pulsar. Which is a shame.
I use Pulsar and VST - although lately I tend to use Acid more since I'm doing almost everything in audio now.
But Pulsar and VST work together very happily. I think the effects and mixing capabilities in the Pulsar environment are far superior to VST. They sound better, are more flexible and even look better (this is assuming you buy the ProPack which is available until march 31st). Of course I see you're thinking of UAD which I hear is very good, but you might consider getting a new Pulsar or Luna as well as your used Pulsar instead. That way you can have the great synths of Pulsar and enough DSP power to mix with effects as well. Maybe you're comfortable working on so many different platforms, but I like to "live" somewhere.
What you can't do using Pulsar and VST together is "export audio". Instead you need to record audio via ASIO and this took me a bit of stuffing around to get the hang of. But the instructions here are now in excruciating detail so no one should have a problem
So my advice (I know I'm rambling) is:
- get Pulsar
- buy the ProPack (great mixer + synths + sampler + modV2 etc)
- use audio where possible rather than MIDI
- try this, see whether you like it
- if you're happy forget UAD and get another Pulsar or Luna
- use both the synths and effects/mixing in Pulsar (you'll love it)
- and forget XTC
