Magma CB4 for sale or trade

Post by Tau »

Hello, fellow Zs!

As some of you know, I have been experimenting with the Magma expansion chasis in order to use scope cards on a laptop. I have had some success in doing this, but, as expected there's a significant drop in PCI bandwith when using the expansion rack. This mostly affects sample players, reverbs and delays, as they need to make more use of RAM, and there's also a decrease on the number of ASIO I/Os available. But synths, FX and other more DSP-oriented devices seem not to suffer so much with this situation, and I could always get a good poliphony performance out of the laptops.

I have installed and used SFP on an old Compaq centrino, via PCMCIA, and on a brand new MacBook Pro, via express-card to PCMCIA adapter. In both cases, the Masterverb test resulted in 5 instances before PCI bandwidth would be taken - my DAW would do 11 instances of MV. I have read about much better results than these here on PlanetZ, especially regarding Dell and Vaio laptops.

The thing is, I only need 2-slots, my new laptop provides express card 34, and I would prefer to have an external power supply, so I decided to sell this whole setup, to start heading in that direction. So, in case someone is interested, here's what I have:

Magma CB4 - 4 slot PCI host, 2U expansion chasis. This would fit 3 Scope Professional boards (just not in the bottom slot, because of a badly placed screw...)
Magma PCMCIA interface card - to use the chassis on a laptop
Magma PCI host interface card - to install on a desktop, to use with the external chassis - this is a small form PCI card that can fit smaller cases where 15DSP cards do not fit, for example.

Chassis comes complete with cables, cd and rack ears, and I would sell the lot for €650
-OR-
I would be willing to trade the chassis and one of the cards for a 2-slot in good condition, preferably with the external 100W PSU
-OR-
Make me an offer you think is fair if you're really interested! This is much less than what I paid for the whole bundle, but all is in excellent condition. I can post some pics too, if necessary!

Items are to be shipped from Portugal, so European Union buyers have an advantage here.

Feel free to ask any questions here, or via PM, and search PlanetZ for threads on Magma to get an idea of what this is about!

All the best, and

Much Peace

Hey there. I found a similar deal on ebay, only slighltly more expensive, but for US residents it's probably better:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=011

What you get here are both PCMCIA and PCI host cards and the Expansion rack. I'll be keeping this offer to PlanetZ for a couple more days, but after that I'll just list it on Ebay.

BTW, my Klangbox Prodissey is also listed there, as I got no offers for it here... Future sales will certainly be a MOTU MIDI Timepiece II (parallel port MIDI interface and patchbay for PC) and a Korg Wavestation SR module, so if you're after any of these, drop me a line.

All the best,

T

would you consider to rip the pcmcia card off the bundle?
I'd be interested in that.

Hi Markus! I can take the PCMCIA off, and, let's say, €150, no problem.

The price would then be €500 for the chassis and either one of the cards (PCI or PCMCIA). Would that be alright wth you?
All the best,

Oh, I'm sorry Markus, I got it all wrong: I thought you meant you wanted the chassis and the PCI, but without the PCMCIA, silly me...

But the offer is good, let me get back to you on this, as I have to go through some e-mails to see if anybody made an offer for the chassis and the PCI... It would be easier to sell the whole lot, but I can take it one step at a time...

See you in a while,

T

I should receive my case every minute, but is comes with a pci card (which is fine, of course) only, and I want to take the opportunity
enabling myself to run it with a notebook as well.
as you might have received other offers before mine, you should check with them, of course, and if it works out for all parties I would be happy
to buy it. you don't have to hurry at all. I'm sure I'll still be interested in a couple o' weeks.
